Bars, Pubs, Taverns, Wine Bars, Bottle Shops, etc. in Toronto

Michael Collins Pub is a new pub that has opened up in Bloordale. I will check it out this weekend.

Man of Kent has great food. Unfortunately for me, it’s too crowded and noisy for me to enjoy it most nights, and the kitchen stopped offering take-out for people like me. So I don’t visit often.

The Oxley is an upscale pub with lovely ambiance and good food. Very nice sticky pudding.

House on Parliament in Cabbagetown is another nice one.

The Caledonian on College Street is currently the only Scottish Pub in Toronto. Great Scotch collection. They host the best Robbie Burns night in Toronto.

Birreria Volo on College St has an extensive beer selection and good Italian food. Their sister shop, Bottega Volo, is a Bottle Shop and Gourmet Shop, that brings in frozen Tourtière from Au Pied de Cochon in Montreal and panettones from Elena in Montreal, during the holidays.

The Emmet Ray is an live venue for jazz and blues, mostly, with a whisky bar and very good pub food.

A few Portuguese Taverns, such as Taberna Nacional, with full kitchens, have opened recently. I enjoy the Sandwiches, coffees and custard tarts at Garrafeira Bottle Shop. I’ll post about the others when I try them.

Michael Collins Pub was too crowded and noisy for my liking.tonight. The crowd was mostly 20somethings on a Saturday night. My friend and I are 50somethings. I don’t think we are the demographic the Michael Collins Pub is after.

We headed west to Burdock, which is a brew pub with a good kitchen. There were a couple free tables, and we were around the median age inside.

I ordered the schnitzel platter and my friend ordered the fries with aioli. Exceptionally good fries.

The schnitzel wasn’t pounded thin the way it would be at a German, Austrian, or Polish resto. It was perfectly breaded and fried.

I’ll be back to try other mains. I had been to Burdock for live music a few times. I’ll be back to eat sometime soon.

My friend tried the Classic beer and the Gose.

I had a couple glasses of red.

We tried the Nagoya sweet soy wings, as well as the hot and sour tempura wings. I liked both. 5 wings to each half lb order.

the fried squid, generous amount for $11 CAD
