Beethoven Market

Nope! I’m just happy they bucked a lot of trends that make dining out less awesome. This was a good time.

Thanks for the update. Been trying to go since it’s theoretically walkable if I was willing to take on the Mar Vista hill but it’s always been booked out. (I’m too old to eat late) Finally going on the 14th with a friend who’s in town.

No one can say they don’t have a sense of humor.

Went on Monday. No pix. Artichokes were much different than the pic above. Still good but smaller cut, less stem, not too crispy. Disappointing. Suppli was very good. Zucca was very nicely crisped but would have loved a bit more goat cheese filling. The bottoms were so delicious once you got to them. “Meatballs” were unique shredded beef breaded and fried with a pesto more than salsa verde. Verdict out on that one. Family all had pasta and 2 were loved. One just liked a lot (my wife’s bolognese). My son is a carbonara junkie so was never going to get a bad review or a taste. Got to try daugher’s casoncelli and the half that didn’t fall in my Skyduster was delish, i will definitely go back for a full order. I had the pork collar with Nectarine and Fennel and it was excellent. Nice to have an affordable neighborhood casual spot. Will be back. Didn’t do any pizzas since we did Doughroom the night before and I intend on having Little Coyote’s Peach monthly special this weekend.

If you haven’t checked out Cosetta, I highly recommend them for pizza (over Beethoven). They’re both super solid additions to the west side.

I understand the hype behind this place - the patio seating is comforting, and the service was a delight. Really brings the warm sunny days together creating a nice environment!

We started with the focaccia with whipped ricotta and honey before transitioning to the salads. As mentioned before, the salads here were felt very fresh, especially the arugula salad - simple traditional with parm and lemon vinaigrette but the freshness of the produce stands out.

The pastas to me were the standouts here - I thought the pasta was cooked well and the flavors came together as they should. The campanelle bolognese was my favorite, I could have had another plate of that for sure. Also, the roasted artichokes with lemon and parsley were the perfect side for the pastas. The only dish that was just okay for me and I would not need to order again was the tuna carpaccio.

If you need a nice refreshment, I recommend their pina colada that is more citrusy than sweet. The Good Green is a nice follow-up or if you want something stronger, the Gregory Ain. And how can I forget that you have to end it with their homemade tiramisu.

All in all, a comfortable neighborhood spot with great prices where you may bump into some familiar faces.

I appreciate that @Clayfu is willing to put his reputation on the line and curate wines for the food at Beethoven Market next week (Thurs 11 Dec). Bummed that I’ll be out of town and will miss the chance to try more of his recommendations in my area on the west side.

(Apologies for the marketing post)

I’m not curating wines for the food per se. I put together an ongoing reserve wine list for them as part of a service I provide as a wine consultant for restaurants. That day is the launch of it, so I’ll be there helping serve wine and drive wine lover traffic.

I’ve put together a ridiculous list of wines dating back to the 60s and the markup is so low that it’s laughable. I think it’s an industry low markup. Ranging from under $150 to higher priced trophy wines. The owner of the restaurant wants to sell bottles and have people enjoy wines without thinking they have to break the bank.

Right now all the reservations are booked out for the night. We are letting in walk ins and there’s some tables reserved for that. There’s also a 24 person bar that’s first come first serve.

If someone really wants to come, feel free to dm and will try and squeeze you in. But you gotta buy a btl of wine

31 posts were split to a new topic: Liquor license tangent

Beethoven Market no longer serves alcohol. I would say more but it’s not allowed in this thread - you can catch up on the full situation here.

@Clayfu I had a reservation for your wine night but had to cancel last minute; now I am even more bummed that I missed it :frowning:

Any of you food operator types know if there is a path forward for beethoven to renew or apply for a new license?

Depends on the circumstances.

I’m so confused… we have a res for next weekend. So is the restaurant still open and serving food, but just no alcohol at this point?

Apparently so.

We decided to try BM tonight, despite no alcohol! I would say this is a very good, not amazing meal.

  • focaccia and whipped ricotta was probably the best thing on the menu! super soft and pillowy focaccia and impossibly light ricotta with a really nice honey. delicious… we wanted to just order the ricotta and honey to dip our pizza crusts.
  • roasted octopus was solid. super tender, maybe almost too tender. charred well. i feel like the salt balance was a bit off, in that the octopus was a bit salty but the accompanying beans were too unsalted.
  • roasted shrimp with salsa verde. i enjoyed this dish. enjoyed this sauce a lot! should have saved it for crusts as well. shrimp were maybe a very slight tad overcooked, but not enough to ruin it.
  • pork jowl. it’s a well proportioned serving. i’d say it was a touch too porky, but not enough to take away too much from the dish. and the apples two ways was a nice touch, with raw, crisp apple slices up top and roasted apples below. i’d order again! my kids loved it.
  • burrata and marinara pizza was delicious. super simple but i loved the crispiness of hte crust when it first came out. and the crusts were airy, crisp and wonderful to dip.
  • clam pizza… someone noted that it was very lemon-forward and i agree it was too much so. the clams were nice and meaty but the lemon was a bit much. but again the crust was wonderful!

final note… they have an entire non-alcoholic mixed drink, wine and beer menu. pretty much every table had a mixed drink and they were charging alcoholic drink prices for non-alcoholic drinks? which leads me to believe that maybe this is a blessing in disguise and they will be just fine, lol!

Ooh, almost forgot! We got two of their strawberry sundaes. 1 scoop each of strawberry sorbet, vanilla gelato and vanilla panna. With a layer of fresh cut strawberries. This was delicious! Strawberry sorbet was perfect balance of sweet/tart. Vanilla gelato was appropriately vanilla-y and flecked with bean. The fresh strawberries were the key though. Juicy, red and ripe. Not super sweet but bursting with strawberry flavor and the perfect way to cut the sweetness from the two scoops. I’d go back just for this!
