We are grateful for the outpouring of support and for the many thoughtful voices in person and on the various social media channels. Mar Vista means a great deal to us, and we recognize that while many people love and enjoy the market, others experience it differently and may feel impacted by things like noise, traffic, parking and the activity that Beethoven Market has brought to the neighborhood. Both perspectives can exist at the same time, and both deserve to be respected. To our neighbors who have raised concerns: we hear you. We take seriously issues around parking availability and late-night or loud conversations as guests are arriving and leaving, and we are actively working to be mindful of how our presence affects the surrounding streets. To our guests and friends of the market: we ask for your help in being thoughtful neighbors (parking respectfully and keeping voices low, especially when heading to and from your cars) so that everyone can enjoy the area peacefully. We kindly ask everyone to keep the dialogue civil, compassionate and grounded in our shared goal of being good neighbors. Please do not contact, confront or single out anyone who has expressed concerns or differing views; their feelings and experiences are as valid as your own. Before posting, please remember this is a community of real people, and each of us is trying to live, work and coexist in the same space. Our hope is that we can move forward with understanding, patience and a spirit of peace (listening to one another even when we don’t fully agree) and remembering that we are all part of the same neighborhood and community. Question: are patrons allowed to bring their own wine/beer?

You aren’t allowed to byob unless a place has an alcohol, beer, or wine license.

Dining partners said they’re fine w/o alcohol, so this’ll be my first visit there.

You can’t byob until their license is restored. I went last weekend. The food is fantastic, but it is weird w/o wine. Can’t do zero proof. Place was full. I met the new beverage director. Fingers crossed that they may be back to full service sometime in April.

I generally don’t drink, so I won’t miss anything.

Glad to hear that it’s full and that the food is (still) good. I saw so much availability when I went to make a reservation just now that I was a bit concerned.

I actually like the idea of interesting, non-alcoholic drink, but the only place that’s done it well so far for me is Vespertine (vs. Girl and Goat and Cosetta), and I keep getting disappointed. But I’ll probably try one of Beethoven Market’s current drinks.

It looks like they just filed for the conditional use permit yesterday so seems unlikely it would be April of this year.

The (handful of NIMBY) neighbors are going to fight this so hard. They’ve filed protests against the state liquor license transfer each step of the way. They’ll have the CUP by April of next year, maybe lol.

The worst part is the inevitable appeal which essentially starts the process over. We had someone wait until 4pm on the final day of the two week appeal window to file his.

When most people dream of getting rich, they dream about big houses, yachts, private jets, etc. I dream about hiring protestors to protest outside protestors’ homes.

I can’t make the meeting, but I did write a message of support on the website. I’ve been twice and both times after the liquor license was revoked. Not sure if patrons are acting differently now to help the restaurant, but, even though the restaurant was very, VERY full both times I went, there really didn’t seem to be that much noise generated, and it’s not like people were talking loudly on the street while waiting to be seated. The patio also seems to be at the “opposite” end of the property (so much of the patio seems to face a major intersection as opposed to a residential property).

The parking situation is not great, but all the cars I saw were parked appropriately (eg., not obnoxiously close to a driveway outlet), and I didn’t see cars racing through the area.

Hope they are able to get their liquor license back/appropriately issued.

Dear Friends, Guests, & Neighbors,

As many of you may already know, Beethoven Market recently had our alcohol license revoked. Since then, we have been actively working through the process to restore our ability to serve alcohol and continue operating as the neighborhood gathering place we have always strived to be.

For those who have continued supporting us — whether by stopping in for coffee, meals, drinks, celebrations, or simply making Beethoven a part of your routine — we are incredibly grateful.

As part of the process moving forward, there will be a virtual public hearing regarding our permit to serve alcohol, and community support can make a meaningful difference. We are asking for support in TWO ways:

A couple sample notes are below if helpful:

Example #1
“I am a resident of Mar Vista. I strongly support the approval of Beethoven Market’s application to serve alcohol at the restaurant. Beethoven is a special local gathering place for the Mar Vista community. We are counting on your support!”

Example #2
“I live in Mar Vista and work at Beethoven. It is one of the best work environments I have ever had. So many neighbors enjoy coming here to meet up with friends, neighbors, and family. We close earlier than most restaurants, and serving alcohol is vital to our jobs and to the community’s enjoyment. Please support the application to serve alcohol at Beethoven again! We are counting on you.”

We remain deeply committed to being a thoughtful, responsible, and positive presence in the neighborhood, and we hope to continue serving this community for many years to come. Thank you again for your continued support, kindness, and belief in Beethoven Market. It truly means the world to us.

With gratitude,
The Beethoven Market Team
