Tartine: only familiar w/ the Santa Monica, which I think is kind of “eh.” The thing I like most there is green goddess dressing for the salad, actually.
Have you been to Chaumont yet? Beverly Hills isn’t that close S. La Brea, but it is worth the trip for the croissant, if you have any flexibility, IMHO.
Just tried a few goodies from Little House Confections (which is kind of a pop up) for the first time today. Snickerdoodle cookies is very good. Will give an update when I eat the rest of the box.
Just go all out on Republique. Shoot you are coming from SF which is great in baked goods. Hopefully GCM is on your list for Nicole Rucker’s Fat N Flour, Donut Man, and Shiku triple bang!
I live in the neighborhood and I’ve tried a lot of these places multiple times:
Deluscious: amazingly delicious cookies, very expensive.
Milk Bar: everything is too sweet. hate it. always a line.
La Chouquette: probably the best croissant in the neighborhood? not necessarily worth driving from other parts in the city, but they open at 9 and they’re just pulling the croissants out of the oven when they open. worth getting one fresh and warm.
Sycamore Kitchen: love the chocolate chip rye cookie.
La Tropezienne: sucks.
SK’s: honestly one of the best donut places in the city. my personal favorite apple fritter. damn good cake donut too.
La Brea bakery: LOL. why even bother. when just down the street you get
Republique: probably the best bakery for a baguette or loaf of artisan bread in the neighborhood. I honestly like clark st baguettes better and you can get those from Standing’s butcher on weekends.
Milk jar: not bad, not memorable.
Roji: wanted to like it but the croissant was powerfully dry.
others have already mentioned diamond, they do a good rye and I’m partial to their black and white cookie but that could just be nostalgia.
sidecar donuts: fancy donuts, I recommend the butter and salt
not a bakery, while you’re in the neighborhood, get a khachapuri from tony khachapuri
