Best cheese pizzas?

On a now defunct forum, I had a long running thread, started in 2010, where I asked for suggestions for best cheese pizzas. And then I’d follow up on most of them. Pizza did not have to necessarily be cheese only, sometimes I’d also get a funghi; diavola; quattro cheese; etc. But for the most part, I’d make an attempt to try a simpler pizza on my first visit.

The only new place I’ve tried since 2017 was Doppio Zero in 2022. I’ve tended to go back to places I’ve already been to, since 2017.

For tomorrow (Thursday) specifically, does anyone have a recommendation in Dublin, Livermore, or Pleasanton?

Otherwise, other suggestions in the Bay Area are still welcome, and I’ll try to get to them sometime.

Here’s the places I had liked the best. Some of these are gone now.

Gioia
Rotten City Pizza
Emilia’s
A Slice Of NY
East End Pizza.
Howie’s Artisan Pizza
Dopo (Closed)
BaoNecci (Moved to Texas)
Paisan (Closed, I just found out!!)
Cotogna
Doppio Zero

Blue Line Pizza
Zero Zero (Closed)
Pizzetta 211
A16 Rockridge

Slicers (Closed)
Ragazza
Oliveto’s (Closed)
Mozzeria (Closed, I just found out!!)
The Forge
Cupola (margherita) (Closed)
Gialina’s
Paxti’s
Zachary’s

I haven’t tried any cheese pizza at these additional places (for me personally a cheese pizza is one of the most boring pizzas and I have never ordered it anywhere) but they could have well made versions for you - Pizzeria Delfina, Vesta, Rise Woodfire, Yellow Moto Pizzeria, Flour & Water Pizzeria, Tony’s Pizza, Damn Fine, PizzaHacker

Thanks. I tried Delfina a long time ago. Didn’t like it as much as my favorites list above.

Yes, I like Tony’s.

Have not tried the others. Thanks for the suggestions.

If you can remember, what pizza varieties did you get at some of those places?

Philomena in Oakland

A16’s new operation La Pala out of the Ferry Building

Also there’s been signage up for A16 at the Oakland Airport

Yes, A16 was on my list in the original post of places I liked.

I saw the A16 sign inside the Oakland airport.

I tend to like going to A16 for the rachetta, but they don’t always have it. One time I went on a Tuesday and they said they don’t make it on Tuesdays.

Thanks for the recommendation of Philomena.

Does anyone have any suggestions that are in Dublin; Pleasanton; or Livermore for tonight specifically?

Other than Paxti’s, which I like. But I’ve been there before.

Same with Zachary’s, I’ve been there before. Although it’s been a long time now.

In SF you might try Ideale. Closest thing to BaoNecci I know of.

There’s a branch of Delarosa in San Ramon.

These guys seem serious: https://www.muchadoaboutpizzaca.com/

Nice, thanks. I do miss BaoNecci.

Except for the time when they asked what kind of water I wanted and gave me options. I think I said “still”, and then when I got the bill, found out that was a $7 bottle of water.

Location looks good and I’m intrigued by their sourdough crust option. Not sure I’ll like it but I’ll probably try it because I want to try something different. Thanks.

places that aren’t on your list that i think are worthwhile
ny-style ‘cheese pizzas’:
outta sight
za pizza

sicilian/grandma-style ‘cheese pizzas’:
pizzeria da laura

detroit-style cheese pizzas:
cellarmaker

neopolitan cheese pizzas:
i dont think there’s much variance between these, and your list basically covers all the worthwhile ones, but rose pizzeria in berkeley is quite good - better than A16 currently.

got nothing as far as dublin etc tho…

La Pala is a different concept than A16 Marina and Rockridge, only reason I mentioned it

Oh I see, thanks for explaining. What is different about it?

Great list, always glad to have more places to consider.

La Pala serves Roman-style pizza a taglio.

Lowkey walk up spot in the Ferry Building serving pizza a taglio like Robert said + small market and other good eats

Thanks. That link helped.

Do you think pizza a taglio tastes different, or is it more about the experience of eating a different shape?

Also, do you know if @wolfe or @Querencia are on this forum? Their SNs from an old forum.

What’s the name of the top pizza that you got?

In Rome, pizza a taglio has a quite different crust than the other local styles.
