Betsy and Bar Betsy - Altadena

I’ve been to Betsy twice in three weeks, and was thrilled with both nights. I paid my own way both time, and am looking forward to the next time I get to go. For further context, this is about the top of my local to LA pricing tier; and is almost perfect to me as high quality casual dining. The table got crumbed; proper serving pieces were brought out in a cutlery tray, and a small bottle of tap water was put on the table so we could serve ourselves. I got photos of the food menu, wine by the glass, and wine by the bottle menus. All photos (with pricing) were taken July 31.

Website that has almost no information

of the food, I’ve had

dinner rolls; snap peas; marinated tomatoes with burrata; and wood oven Brussel sprouts

One off item menu - weiser farms melon

for mains the NY strip and the heritage pork chop.

One dessert - the basque cheesecake

The sourcing and treatment of the vegetables are god tier. I liked the pork chop and loved the steak (ate it twice at my suggestion).

Things to be aware of - it’s a small place with a lot of sidewalk seating. The seating is great but 90 degrees outside is still 90 degrees. Inside is a (redundant) small place. With a big wood fire that they cook with - so it’ll get toasty in there.

If I had anyone with physical accessiblity needs I’d think some of the indoor tables would be too tight to be comfortable.

The menu is terse, and I noticed the server made a point of verbally describing the “summer vegetable gala.” I’d get it next time - market vegetables served on whipped feta with some kind of flat bread? The vegetable dishes I’ve had at Betsy make me want to join their army, so let’s goooo! The snap peas had fine parm grated on top. Nothing written on the menu made me think there’d be cheese with the thing I ordered. It was fine for me, however, my romantic partner has a dairy issue so it would have been a problem for him.

The reservations are released two weeks at a time, and I’m betting they’re about to switch from neighborhood secret to blasted all over as a great spot. If you have the money and inclination, get in where you fit in.

“everything please” menu line item :face_vomiting: wouldn’t expect much else from ol’ Tyler Wells.

If I had $1,000 to spend on a meal I still wouldn’t. I’d get a hell of a lot more enjoyment out of 40 $25 meals.

To each his own.

I’ll be polite in a public forum, but I’ve heard lots of verified tales from friends/colleagues associated with All Time over the years to not be a fan of what he’s selling.

when i first went i was confused by the huge amount of italian wine on their list

David Rosoff manages the wine program.

makes sense. the man loves his italian wines

He’ll likely oversee the wine program at Tyler’s new project in Melrose Hill.
