instead of the paper filters for the chemex, you can use a 3rd party reusable coffee sock.
Thanks for the recommendation. Definitely made me feel better about the Chemex and leaning this way while I continue to do research.
We’ve used the Filtron for years now and the results are pretty good. However, it has some annoying features (eg, bulky, largely useless water dispenser, crap flask to decant into) so if I was buying again I’d probably go for the Toddy
I used to have a Hario Cold Brew maker, but it broke. Now I use reusable organic cotton tea bags. It’s a little more messy, but not by a ton. I just put the grounds in my compost bin and then wash the bags with a little dot of dish soup. Prop them up on pasta fork in the utensil crock and they dry within hours.
And true to my fancy but lazy tendencies… I also got this….
It’s essentially an fancy and over powered single serve machine I like to make dirty Matcha and Chai drinks and I wanted to have something for my family which is big on single serve coffee… This way I don’t have to buy the pods, I buy coffee I love (City Bean and what ever fancy stuff catches my eye) and can also get a super quick little bit of brew day to day. Like the Otto (Which I still use and love) for me, it’s great. For anyone else, do your homework.
After a lot of research I ended up buying the Ovalware which was recommended on Serious Eats and is top 10 on Amazon. The vessel fits in my fridge and makes 3 servings at a time. A little more than a cup per serving.
85 grams coffee ground at 28 setting on my Gaggia Classic pro grinder
1 liter of room temp water = 4.22 cups of coffee
Ended up with ~3.25 cups of cold brew
No sediment in the vessel and very easy to make, store and pour. Cleaning is pretty easy. The only small gripe is that the filter is narrow and long so cleaning out the used grinds isn’t simple. Happy with my purchase overall though.
I finally got around to putting my Technivorm Moccamaster on eBay. Makes great coffee, but I no longer need it since I stopped drinking it (turns out caffeine gives me high blood pressure). Opening bid $50.
