Cafe 2001 - Arts District

That’s one of the things I love about LA you can wear just about anything out and no one cares.

Yeah, LA is (for better or worse) a “tank top at the opera” kinda town. (And yes, I personally witnessed this. Twice, on each of my two most recent visits there)…

watermelon cake looked better than it tasted.

never had a soggy panzanella before

whats interesting is that at least on our last trip to lugano (swiss italian) and milan every panzanella I had was soggy. So I think maybe that’s how they do it over there?

I’ve always eaten/made panzanella that was crunchy but that’s because that’s all I’ve had prior to this trip

i think you’re right. the internet says “modern” panzanellas toast the bread for texture.

I definitely prefer “modern”

Yeah, panzanella is traditionally soggy. Stale bread reconstituted by juicy tomatoes.

I stopped by Cafe 2001 for a slice of Japanese American apple pie.

From their Instagram:

JAPANESE AMERICAN APPLE PIES AT THE CAFE FOR THE NEXT 10 DAYS

We’ll be baking apple pies - sold whole and by the slice - for the next ten days. It’s a collaboration with the Artist David Horvitz and part of his current exhibition - This Rainy Night, at Axle Contemporary in Santa Fe. The pies are filled with a layer of buckwheat jam, apple compote and a pile of apples David picked and brought from New Mexico. All wrapped in our house made puff pastry and baked till golden brown. Each day we’ll be baking two pies. One sold by the slice in the shop. And one will be sold whole - baked with a ceramic cat (pictured) made by David, and sold as his art work.

A word from David:
“There was an incarceration camp in Santa Fe for Japanese men during World War II - these men were imprisoned by the federal government for no other reason than being Japanese. Some of these men were allowed to work as day laborers in local apple orchards, and I picked apples from the same trees of what is left of the old 100-year-old Orchards. Baked into each pie is a ceramic cat. The cat is based on one carved from wood by a man named Tamasaku Watanabe during his incarceration in New Mexico, thousands of miles away from his family and home in Hawai‘i. Today, Watanabe’s cat sits hidden in a display case at the New Mexico History Museum…For This Rainy Night, I imagine the cat escaping from its confines in the museum and wandering about, telling its story to whoever will listen.”

A slice of Japanese American Apple Pie $8

A whole Japanese American Apple Pie Baked baked with a Ceramic Cat by David Horvitz $201

I really liked the pie, and it was perfect paired with the Karla Diaz exhibit down the street at the Luis de Jesus gallery.

I’ve joined the laptop army upstairs (now that semester is in season, verve is too full of students and hard to find space to work).

I was actually looking out for the radish taramasalata but missed it :frowning:

The potatoes on the hash were insane. Crazy crisp. I’m definitely not brave enough to try at home. Porcini risotto on the menu this time around - this was really good, very stick-to-the-ribs satisfying.

Hours seem to be shorter - closing at 4p, no more happy hour?

I really do like being able to chill and munch on the high-quality food while laptoping away, without feeling too guilty. (we did two “courses” or rounds)

Cafe 2011 and Yess relocating anyone know where?

I wanted to give this place a last goodbye. Love the location and vibe. To be honest it hasn’t hit quite the highs the last couple visits -wonder if Chef Giles Clark left in advance of the closing?

In any case today’s chocolate tart and cortado were excellent. The coffee program really got much better from the beginning. Also picked up a bottle of Oregon Chardonnay that was part of a collab with another restaurant (wish I had more details but I trust their taste!)
