Yep! Knorr Suissa as it’s lovingly called in Mexico is ESSENTIAL! I love Salty Cocina’s videos because she doesn’t hold back and amits to using “chicken/tomato bullion” in her recipes (which are pretty darn spot on.
Although my mom always used Wyler’s chicken ( the one with the blue top) bouillon growing up and some things just don’t taste quite right switching it out. Though it’s not as common these days lol.
I’m thinking that cornstach is in the batter?
people should talk more about this place. outstanding fried chicken. phenomenal oxtail. great vibe.
I found this: A Tribute to Ruben Morancy.
His bio and his impact on the California wine community, including a journey from Wine Director at San Francisco’s Michelin starred Coi, culminating in his creation & legacy that is Adams Wine Shop - focusing on Black and female winemakers.
What I will remember and miss is described in this piece as him ”possessing a uniquely astute wine sense”. I am getting more into wines as I mature and have a lot of learning to do. With Ruben I didn’t need superior knowledge for him to pick the perfect wine for my palate, what I was cooking or a particular occasion, while dispensing valuable knowledge in his quiet unobtrusive manner. I will miss him very much. ![]()

Yes. Such a tragedy. I was at the shop just weeks before he passed and he was jovial as ever! . It was very sudden. I have been since his passing and the stock is as strong as ever. I think Ruben was so generous of a person that he armed the staff there with all the info the need to carry forth with the mission. They even had this delightful Peach Ale from an Atlanta brewer with can art featuring Stacey Abrams! It was like Ruben was speaking to me from the clouds… lol! Also the Buttermilk Vanilla ice cream I recently had was AMAZING and as always a short walk from the new Tartine and Mian
—Dommy!
I thought of you @Dommy when reading and writing about Ruben passing. Incredibly sad. ![]()
So true. We were there a couple weeks after his passing (but didn’t know) and I think we were helped by the new manager, Jaela Salala. I already knew what I wanted and didn’t need a lot of help, but she was very nice. I look forward to shopping with her. As always you posted some interesting finds.
RIP Ruben ![]()
Peony: I find the food tastes good. Very comforting. I enjoyed the meal. Wish they could serve faster.
Warrior: quality food, good wine, understaffed, great patio. We liked it better than our recent meal at Mandolin Taverna, to provide a point of reference.
What dishes are in photos 3&4?
Not sure where you are counting from. The dishes are cornbread, BBQ cauliflower, blackened salmon, shrimp and grits, red beans and rice, collard greens, and candied yams. I thought the salmon was the best dish—cooked medium but still creamy.
These. Salmon dish looks delicious.
Look who’s at our favorite local wine shop!

Congratulations Mayor Bass!
Ha!!! She loves good eats! I ran into her at this year’s East LA meets Napa and she’s the one who put in the order for the prez at Tacos 1986! ![]()
