Campo É Carbón

Thanks to at EaterLA, I was inspired to try Campo É Carbón. It’s just a short jaunt from where I live so why not?

Once you arrive (park by the nearby school for easy and plentiful parking), you stroll into a resort-style backyard. Sparkling pool, waning sunset of the day, music playing and an outdoor kitchen as the center of the of it all.

The staff is casual, but welcoming. Menus placed at each setting so you have time to peruse before making your choices.

This is a delayed post as we went back in April. Things are getting settled, and I wasn’t entirely surprised that some cocktails were served in pint-sized deli containers cups. I did not mind one bit at all since the cocktails were delicious.

I will say that I’m most struck by the vegetable dishes here. Cooked extraordinarily well and garnished with delightful components. And you all know that I adore a good vegetable dish. My only complaint was that each vegetable dish included a form of yogurt so it was a touch redundant.

Spouted cauliflower - lemon, garlic, yogurt

Snap peas - labne, olive oil, mint, crispy quinoa

Octopus a la brasa - carrot hummus, chile morita, chicharron gremolata, confit tomato (this was a really great dish…I believe I still see it on the menu so it might turn into a signature dish)

Crab Alfredo - garlic, mentaiko, lemon, chile threads (made with udon, this was rich and a little gloppy to me…I ate about 4-5 bites and gave up)

Not pictured: crudo (good, but more acidic than I personally prefer), marlin taco (really nice bite, but doesn’t come close to the heights of Sergio and 106 Underground), Korean-ish short rib (a nice dish)

@monaeats showed up after us and was seated at the table nearby. She raved about the crudo and octopus on her best dishes eaten during the week.

We had a good experience, but haven’t been free to return to see the progression.

They also offer a casual weekend brunch on occasion.

Notifications for reservations can be found on their IG page.

Had an excellent meal here tonight. Had mixed expectations based on @attran99 review and the hype Eater article produced. We are planning on bringing friends when the next dinner series is announced.

Family style dishes.

Corkage is $25 max of two bottles. This bottle paired well with most dishes.

Bucatini was delicious. Home made al dente pasta with good mushroom flavor. Didn’t get too much truffle and the bone marrow was gilding the lily. Up there with the Bestia bone marrow pasta. Seriously.

We are generally not fans of cooked oysters but these were yummy. Very much a Thai flavored oyster with fresh basil and garlic. Fresno chili wasn’t too spicy.

Pork belly and octopus with home made tortillas. If I closed my eyes and ate this dish I would have sworn I was eating gochujang fried porky belly. Nice crisp skin on the pork belly and the mole was savory. We ate every single morsel of this dish. Wish there was more octopus but I’d order this again in a heartbeat. Red onions, radish and guacamole helped to balance the taco.

Dry aged ribeye with polenta and rapini. Nice char on the steak but the least interesting dish of the night. Well cooked but we should have ordered the duck and Kimchi fried rice.

Pound cake with berries and dulce de leche cream. We generally don’t order dessert but this was delicious. Not too sweet. Nice caramel burnt type flavor on the home made Sara Lee style poundcake. I mean that in a good way. Berries were ok but not in season.

Nice to see they are tightening up!
I’ve been following their menu development and they seem to keep/improve the more successful dishes and adapting according to seasons.
I’m going to give them another go when the weather warms.
Did the chowpups have favorites?

Kids loved the octopus pork belly dish with the home made tortillas. My daughter devoured the dessert but she has a sweet tooth.

I was nervous about the bucatini dish but it was great. Well sauced and excellent balance of flavor. Almost could not taste the truffle which. Luckily it was not the pasta dish from your first meal drowned in sauce.

It did a little cold towards the end of the meal but they do have heat lamps and blankets. They said they’ll start brunch again once it heats up probably towards Memorial Day.
