Chinese restaurant in Erevan, Armenia Opens in Glendale

Completely baffled by the new Dragon Garden on Orange St. in Glendale. Servers in stereotypical Chinese hats, separate Chinese and Japanese menus, no beef dishes but plenty of veal dishes, high end items like $95 duck de jou, as well as non-touristy items like pig ears and Chinese style frog legs. And leafing through the glossy menu most of the dishes had a reddish hue, including the fried rice. No complaints about my giant veal bao, but I left shaking my head in confusion.

Returning home, I hoped an internet search would clear things up for me but I didn’t find anything right away. But then I found a link to their Instagram page announcing their new Glendale location. Aha, this wasn’t a brand new enterprise! And a couple of clicks later and I learned their main location was in Erevan, Armenia. Well that explains it. Surprising there were no clues visible to me of the Armenian connection. See interior shots and sample menu page, and their logo which is only in Chinese.

So this is Armenian Chinese food?

Must be even though there are some pretty sophisticated Chinese dishes. But they don’t taste Chinese.

I think that is absolutely awesome. Only in LA (outside of Armenia itself, of course)!

What are they cooking, then, if not traditional Chinese recipes? Some kind of pan-Chinese fusion reflecting what’s available in Yerevan?

Ni Rou Mein with fettuccine. Veal bao with a bun looking like mantou but regular bread,
