No, b/c posters who dare to challenge forum consensus favs often get mocked and chased off. You yourself have already stated multiple times on this thread that you think people who like other types of ccokies should be laughed at, despite trying to project that opinion as belonging to that of some mythical, fictional New Yorker.
You don’t like Levain style cookies. That’s fine. No one’s forcing you to eat one or to read the opinions of others. But i really don’t get why you don’t seem to understand that your opinion really is subjective, not superior to opinion of others, and not shared by all.
I also enjoy reading and learning about other people’s opinions and tastes. Apparently you do not.
One style of interaction will hopefully contribute to a lively and vibrant forum.
Challenging why others dare to post their opinions on a forum will likely lead to the board further contracting and dying.
i agree with your statements except for “posters who dare to challenge forum consensus favs often get mocked and chased off”
most of the people who were mocked or “chased off” was not because of their opinions on the restaurants themselves or if they liked the food or not. it was more of posters acting like assholes and getting called out on it.
People post contrarian opinions here all the time.
Maybe not about Hayato or République, or other places that work their asses off to be consistently great. But here aren’t many restaurants about which there’s much of a consensus.
That’s contrary to the terms of service on this board and I remove such posts if anyone flags them.
Traffic on this board has been fairly consistent. It’s up a bit year-over-year.
Cookies have a lot of different textures: soft and cakey, chewy, crunchy, hard and snappy. If you like only one of those, you don’t like cookies all that much.
I don’t see this as any big debate – just a few people stating their personal preferences regarding cookie texture, degree of doneness, etc. I’m sure you’ll agree that these characteristics vary between cookies. I’m surprised that this discussion seems to bother you, especially as you’ve been an active participant and have stated your own opinions rather strongly, and as noted, have made fun of other peoples’ opinions. BTW, when you say “is in fact not that great a cookie in my opinion”, specifically to which cookie are you referring? Just curious.
To return to our conversation, @paranoidgarliclover , I’ll back up a bit myself, and stick with “crumbly” to describe those shortbread rounds – crispy would be inaccurate as they don’t really have “snap” at all – if anything, I’d call them “delicate” as compared to the fingers, which as I mentioned seem dense, almost heavy. And to answer your question, the rounds are maybe a bit thinner than Clare’s, but if so, not by much – but definitely thinner than the fingers.
Lemme think more about your take on this… I recall that there are certainly some posters who were assholes and were justifiably called out on it (and were rightly banned). But I do think that there also some posters who might have felt teased (and had a good reason to feel that way) and that perhaps that led to them leaving (or posting less). Hard to know b/c they didn’t necessarily explain how they were feeling or why they left/posted less.
So, in thinking about it more, I will say that my statement about a consensus opinion is prob not very accurate, and that most posters who left were not chased off b/c of differing opinion. But I do think there was some level of significant teasing that had gone on in the past (and that, thankfully generally does not seem to happen much now at all).
Do the stats show who posts? And more in aggregate. As in, are there more (or less) unique posters contributing, even if traffic overall is the same?
Never said I was an overall cookie fan. Of cookie, I only really like choc chip and specifically Clare’s. That’s prob why I like the cookie being packed w/ chips. This whole discussion has taught me that I prob don’t much like cookie medium!
Always happy to return to the topic.
Then the rounds make work for me. What’s interesting is “crumbly” and “delicate.” I get why you’re describing Walker’s fingers as crumbly, but I myself would actually characterize Clare’s as the more crumbly one. But I think the term “delicate” hits it on the head for me (in terms of why I like Clare’s better and how it compares to the Walker’s fingers).
Maybe I’ll do an at-home bang bang of Walker’s vs. Clare’s (when I recover sufficiently from eating the Levain cookies) and post under July rundown (so as to not retract from this thread mainly being about choc chip). Heh.
Tried Beverly Hills Cookies the other night with no expectations as admittedly I’ve always been in the minority in not liking Levain or Levain-esque cookies. Even so, BHC was terrible. I took one bite of the lemon white chocolate and wanted to spit it out. I took a second bite later just to confirm and yep, terrible. The base is both bland and bad, and the white chocolate chips aren’t able to revive it. Charging $6.59 for a cookie that’s not even half decent- aiy. Of course I might be in the minority on this one as well, as I see they’ve already garnered mostly positive and raving reviews. YMMV.
Haha actually lemon cookies in general can be delightful i.e. J&V’s lemon ricotta cookie. Also, the girl working noted it along with the chocolate walnut as top sellers so I figured I might start there.
I quite like Milk Jar’s Lemon Blueberry seasonal cookie, so may try the lemon cookie. Was thinking of popping by this week to see what the hype was about. Looks close to Urth Caffe and I haven’t been there in a while.
The chocolate chip cookies at Pizzeria Mozza are outstanding. They come out warm. A healthy sprinkle of sea salt. Great texture. The right combo for some crispy edges and soft gooey in the middle. Fantastic all around and even better with some vanilla gelato on the side.
