Looking for a nice upscale cocktail lounge downtown that we can possibly make reservations at. Don’t want it very busy and with good drinks.
The Wolves?
Assuming Death & Co. would be too busy for you. I’ve always found Bar Franca to be nice and low key.
Never heard of any of these I will have to do my research thank you!
How busy does death and co get? Like insanely busy?
I haven’t been to Death & Co recently, but went a couple times a year or two ago and didn’t see an open table or bar seat the entire time.
I second The Wolves (they must have re-opened somewhat recently, I remember walking by all the time during the height of covid and seeing them boarded up).
I’d also recommend Bar Jackalope (the more exclusive backroom of Seven Grand), The Varnish for a more intimate speakeasy with music, and V for pretty good food and vibe (check out the converted bank vault in the back).
In very nearby Echo Park, I love love love Thunderbolt
Death & Co can get really busy, but you can make reservations! There’s an overflow standing only room, but reservations get seats in the main room.
Going to add another huge recommendation for Thunderbolt.
Great cocktails and fantastic service.
Have you checked out Genever in Filipino town? Really cool place and vibe
I think we are going to go with thunderbolt. I emailed both wolves and thunderbolt and thunderbolt responded first. Will report back!
The Wolves hasn’t been the same since Kevin Lee departed.
I went following his departure and found the drinks a little off balanced.
It’s a gorgeous venue, though.
Thunderbolt was rated one of the best bars in the world by the “Pinnacle Guide,” which touts itself as the bar equivalent to Michelin.
Personally, it’s not my kind of bar. I like a quiet bar with leather chairs that’s conducive to thinking as opposed to a loud bar with stools that’s conducive to chatting. But I loved the Basque cider they had on tap and liked the one cocktail I tried.
