Coffee beans worth a drive

Dayglow.

I thought with the aesthetics that this was some influencer catered shop. They have lots of different beans to choose for a pour over and all the classic espresso based. Also a large overwhelming selection of speciality drinks. I wouldn’t even know where to start. They gave me a free donut for a service mishap. Chocolate sprinkle cake donut. It was super moist brownie-like.

dayglow is a serious coffee operation - some of their baristas have place decently high in the national barista comeptition

bumping boy & the bear - they have some very cutting edge 3rd-wave (maybe it’s 4th-wave at this point?) beans…

Hey there, I have a list of coffee places that are in Boyle Heights. Buyer beware, I don’t have a discerning palate but thought to highlight them.

Cafe Niña
[https://www.yelp.com/biz/cafe-niña-los-angeles-2]
It’s in someone’s front yard, and looks like the family is taking the business somewhat seriously. Hours posted, holiday decorations appropriate, etc.

Picaresca

I understand this place was in the Mercado before moving into this brick and mortar (across the street from Mariscos Jr., where I would totally go on random people’s recommendations if not for my shellfish allergy).

Good coffee, my neighbors like the breakfast burrito, and the place always seems nicely busy.

Cafe Cafe which is part of Macheen

Arrúmame Café - right down the street from Macheen

This menu has lots of stuff on it that sounds complex. Iced pistachio latte? Guava Matcha latte with oatmilk?
Again, I’m a basic betty that prefers black drip coffee, however, I’m very very nosy so hope someone reading this will try it and report back.

Weird Wave coffee is still going even after the pandemic. I think they’re pick up only, no more going into their tiny space.

There’s a few of La Monarchas as well.

I go to Dayglow almost every day. They do a great job selecting beans with interesting flavor profiles and dialing them in for pour over. Their two espresso choices are always outstanding too. Someone here introduced me to them years ago – thanks whoever it was!

B&tB is now in Pasadena too, for those of us in the broader NE end of the city. I like the shop in Redondo, looking forward to checking out the Pasadena location.

Klatch is doing pour overs @ $3.

I don’t think no where else is doing that in LA. Maybe not worth a drive for most of you but if you are a South Bay local or you are in the area you can’t beat that price. I think Sbux costs more.

The coffee?

Super smooth no need for milk or cream.

Daniel @ Redondo location is a award winning barista

They have lids with a aroma hole that is pretty cool with each sip

TB&TB Redondo. The in-store coffee is always the same beans. It’s a cool place to do some work, and meet a friend.

Be Bright. Fun new AAPI menu for May. Got the Ube Pandan latte. Real nice. Love the ube foam/cream. Sergio is out of town in Korea. Easy residential parking north or south of Melrose. Melrose Trading Post is nearby if you need something to do on a Sunday. Kimchi and spam croissant was fine. Cheese would make it perfect imo

They do have Hanoi Egg Coffee if you always wanted to try it without going to Little Saigon

B&tB Pasadena update: solid cortado. Wanted a pourover but they were $12 and seventeen freaking dollars, respectively, and I couldn’t bring myself to pull the trigger. For reference I did happily pay $11 at Endorffeine on ‘rare pourover Tuesday’ a few weeks ago, $8ish at Kumquat, and what now seems to be the best deal in town $6.50 at Highlight for Manhattan Coffee Roaster beans.

It’s difficult to compare. Pour over pricing strictly depends on beans. Loquat has been offering pour over for a particular geisha with carbonic maceration process for $13-$15 IIRC. The rest of their offerings are similarly priced compared to other specialty shops.

Tuesday Rare Pours at Endorffeine

Gesha from Prolog. Jasmine tea like notes for the nose and honey on the taste. Spectacular coffee!

Speaking to the choir here……absolutely a destination shop. A temple of coffee. A lone barista who will not compromise for quality and taste. Zero compromise. Not IG friendly. No crowds. Just pure coffee and one guy who is perfecting his craft.

Any idea the temp he brewed at and how many pours he did? Also, did he use his EK43 or EG1 to grind?

I have no idea!

Highly recommended as JL would say if you happen to have time on a Tuesday

Tuesday Pours at the best coffee shop, Endorffeine.

From Sey. Brazil. Washed. Floral and fruity. Not the typical rich and chocolatey you expect from Brazil.

I need to get back there. Been a few years. I usually go to loquat, stereoscope, eightfold, regent and cogno. Though I love going to any new spots that open too. Let’s get a brew at Endo soon

super curious about the lid with the aroma hole, is that a patented thing and does it spill at all?

It’s a must. More of a temple of coffee not really a place to socialize. I don’t think Jack likes the attention. He actually likes the weekday hours and being only open Mon-Thur. I like some of those other places you mentioned. Still need to try some of those you mentioned like Eightfold.
He is interesting to talk to about coffee!

Have you tried Nam Coffee? New Vietnamese coffeeshop, real coffee shop not the ones Uncles go to in Little Saigon lol. Got the phin drip/filter etc.

I believe they are working on a patent!

I think it will spill a little but I think it’s a cool concept. I’ll have to ask Daniel the next time I see him about that lid.
