Looking forward to reading your reviews.
Dayglow Silver Lake rec: The Kolo pourover (I forget the country of bean origin). I’ve had it multiple times and it’s a cut above the rest of the coffees on the list. I like it for its deep, thick flavor and mouthfeel and its jammy red fruit. Funny – this is the opposite of what I prefer in red wines.
Thanks I had a free morning so drove over today, nice space and solid pourover list
Junia Cafe, Gardena.
Pulled by Mike! Cortado perfectly balanced. The orange syrup on that latte is insanely good. Zest, juiced, and reduced. Yuzu Shiso Ade. So refreshing making their own shiso syrup.Great vibes here. Sweet owner couple/mom-n-pop. Very popular with local Asian-American crowd.
This is a serious shop but their “fun” stuff is also pretty damn serious. One cream top for Earl Grey matcha drink. None of the fun stuff if overly sweet.
Nice! I went on thanksgiving they have great pastries from a commercial baker “from thin air” plus they used moim beans for their drip super flavorful and slightly acidic wish it was closer
Ha I also went. 20% being donated it was a no brainer.
Just realize that yuzu shiso is very Tom Collins like.
I saw that bag you got.
I am not exactly around the corner either. Gardena has the best concentration of restaurants in the South Bay so it’s worth it to combine with other visits
Are these today? We were also there in the am!
I went in the afternoon. Glad you made it out . What did you get
Went to Junia a couple of days ago and it was slammed near closing time. Thought the cortado was pretty good and wife got the earl grey matcha cream top, which was really good albeit a little too small.
Saw this too but Christmas Day is an interesting day to schedule this. I do find them calling themselves “Atelier Q” a bit cringe but hey, those coffees are ultra luxury.
Moim washed Gesha pour over at Junia was clean and delicious. It was nice chatting to the baristas about brewing pour overs. Looking forward to exploring more of their menu.
Also had a toasted vanilla latte as a fun drink to go. Thanks for the tip FTCers.
I liked this more than my recent flower child. Acidic but with strong body and not overly fruity but good fruit notes. Great drinking coffee
How long did your rest your Flower Child beans. General rule of thumb for FC is three weeks to start. I had the Alba Pink Bourbon as my subscription and was quite pleased with it. I had ILSE subscription two years ago. They provided good value and not shy about shipping interesting beans, as part of sub, once a while.
3 weeks. I had the same beans. The best flavor I got out of them was at a lower temp 195 but never got an excellent cup unfortunately
My temp is pretty much locked to 93C. 15g beans. 33s/50g bloom, then pour to 130/190/236. done around 2:45.
I’m definitely getting the described tasting notes of raspberry, hibiscus, and citrus on that Wilson Alba from Flower Child.
I do 15g, 1 to 17 ratio, and 208f. 50g water with 1 min bloom follow by two 102-3ish pours. Total draw down time is around 3 mins with Cafe Abaca filter and a V60…using ultra low fines burrs.
Picaresca is opening a second spot at 8th and Olympic in the former Tio Pepe’s spot. They will keep their cafe at Evergreen and 4th open as well. They roast their own beans and I find the cafe vibes immaculate.
Coffee beans worth a drive… but what about worth a flight?
Probably not but most of my coffee bean backlog is international these days and thought I’d share. I just opened a bag from Shanghai and tasted one that was just ![]()
Peru Cusco La Margarita
Gesha Washed
This one is from Shanghai (I might do a bigger post on my China travels but honestly not sure). I grabbed it at Lucky Draw cafe (有容乃大) operated by Small Arms Big Heart. I presume lucky draw is the cafe and small arms is the roastery (though the way I’ve read it they’re basically one and the same). I bought a bunch of drip packets (the closest thing to an instant pour over you can get and popular in Asia) and this bag of beans.
I did this roughly 1:15 in a straightforward hybrid immersion at 195 F and WOW. So delicious, even from the first sip. Light, fruity but not as in your face as some other light roasts. Sadly I am poor at tasting notes but suffice to say I was impressed. I’d definitely recommend Lucky Draw if looking for great light roast coffee in Shanghai. Not sure this roaster sells overseas so that might be your only way for now. I haven’t heard of it being sold here at least but that could change as more Chinese roasters enter the US market (terraform and gout and co are the current ones I’m aware of).
