December 2025 Rundown

That was our favorite too.

@LouisianaMouth found the cabbage too hot , for me it was fine.

We were at the long combined table (can seat two groups of 4) at ~730pm.

Another note: I was bummed that they sold out of the key lime pie by around 830, so order earlier in your meal if you’re there on the later side.

Did takeout from Nok’s Kitchen in Westminster bc I was down in OC for work. I see @EattheWorldLA went down there a few years back. Takeout was exceptional! The Lao sausage is smoky and tart and gorgeous, and I need to figure out what’s in the accompanying sauce. I also had an oxtail soup that had a tom saap style broth. Reminded me of Isaan Station’s heyday. So good.

Some recent eats:

Jitlada: crispy pork belly jungle curry  :face_savoring_food:

Morning glory :ok_hand:

Mint Restaurant (Laguna Hills): really cool spot with old school black & white bollywood movies/songs projected onto the brick wall, and from same team as Khan Saab. Samosa chaat, macaron galab jamun, and chicken karahi were fantastic

Taqueria Bandita (Santa Ana): Nice al pastor + hand made pink (beet) tortillas + salsa macha + pineapple :ok_hand:

ABSteak inside the Beverly Center. First time here, and up there with my favorite kbbq spots like jeong yuk jeom, daedo sikdang, soowan galbi, and quarters!

Henrys Cuisine (Alhambra): classic vietnamese/cantonese spot, the garlic pea tips stir fry and house specialty vietnamese style lobster :lobster: were amazing.

Is there a Paty’s substitute? I need to meet a colleague for catch up late afternoon coffee and sweets in Toluca Lake area. Paty’s is the easiest for breadth of menu and local attraction status.

We have to be in Toluca Lake for a 4:30 meeting, so location of our pre-meeting coffee is tied to that. I’d prefer a place that is conducive to sitting and talking.

I think Coffee Commissary is the move in that area, tho it can get a little crowded at prime time (you’re probably late enough to be safe). There’s also an Alfred, and former coworkers always like the desserts at SweetSalt (didn’t work for me as much but ymmv).

Sweetsalt moved into a bigger new spot one block over and it’s probably your best bet if you don’t want Paty’s.

For “fun” pizza i think pineapple is great and can pair really well with pep/ham/sausage.

My colleague cast a vote before I submitted mine - and we ended up at Republic of Pies. Cute place with lots of stressed out people typing spec scripts on laptops. My dessert was too sweet for my tastes; and even though I had a decaf capp at a table, it still came in a paper cup. Good coffee from what I could tell. They were out of all non caffeinated tea options, which is why I went with coffee.

My coffee was approx. $5; colleague bought the sweets. While all the meters directly in front of the restaurant are one hour only, the meters on Vineland are two hours, and there are also additional non metered, two hour spots.

:100: agreed. I like Parks, but it is not up there at the top for me, when compared to the aforementioned spots.

I never used to like pineapple on pie, til i discovered al pastor/trompos… ham+pineapple is a killer combo, with triple beam doing a decent version.

You guys are getting wild with the pineapple on pizza talk. Haven’t been to Vaca in years. Had a great meal there. Mostly great food with a couple of misses. Definitely would come back. Packed on a Tuesday night.

Paella is always a gamble. This was not good. Lukewarm, little socorrat and veered on the sweet side.

The pan con tomato was deconstructed. Toasted bread, olive oil in a vial, sea salt and tomato sauce. It tasted fine but wished it was made in the kitchen.

Dates with cheese and bacon. These always hit the spot. I think I prefer when they stick an almond in there for crunch and texture,

Bikini was nicely toasted. Rich and delicious.

Nice cheese board. The two sauces at the end were guava and something else I didn’t like. The cheese, pickles and iberico were lovely.

Garlic lovers rejoice. Plump juicy shrimp. Sop up all the sauce with the bread.

Basic but good. Well cooked octopus.

The start of the show. One of the best steaks I’ve had at a restaurant or steakhouse in a long time. Perfectly cooked. Well seasoned. Delicious dry aged ribeye. Would come back just for this.

I am not opposed to that!

Yeah that paella from Vaca DTLA was underwhelming… Glad to hear the steak made up for it!
