‘Tis the season!!!
Late night NY slices, from the newest Joe’s Pizza location… In Palms!
@J_L ’s camera returns!
Lots of filling! And I get a whole thing of curtido and a squirt bottle of salsa roja to enjoy to my hearts content!!
Fries with “juice” at Dino’s. GOATed hood classic spot! The best soggy fries. Mateo’s.Mateo’s is one of the finest mini chains in LA. Ice cream, fruit bars, fruit bowls, smoothies, juices. Really grateful for these Mexican spots. Sad that some people would rather go to Erewhon when in LA when this is the real LA. Highland Park alone has 3 Mexican juice spots.
You got the fries sans chicken?
Yes no chicken for me!
Gold Spoon, Inglewood.Takeout Jamaican spot but there is 2 tables inside.
Menu.Seems to be a mom-n-pop op. Mom in the kitchen and Pop taking orders. I got the fried cauliflower. Delicious batter on the outside. Comes with rice beans, plantains, veggies.
Don’t miss out on that soursop juice! You ain’t going to find that at most places! Best thing I drank since Cococane in Little Saigon.
I should really start a thread for this whole area of Inglewood/Crenshaw/Leimert/South Central (non Mexican(. Lots of diversity in that there is Afro-Caribbean, African, and African American. I don’t think you will find that elsewhere in the city and county
Corner beef noodle house remains my favorite TBNS in the area, though I’m not sure it’s worth the long drive from LA when there are so many great options in closer parts of the SGV. Half tendon, half beef, with thick noodles. Generous portion of tendon, tender beef, great chew on the noodles.
Late November adds, but also visited Boichik Bagels (DTLA), which was mid. May be my own fault for visiting a bagel shop past noon, but the chew was too tough. Toppings were also poorly sliced, IMO. For $20, there are much better lox bagel options in town.
Last entry is from Petitgrain in Santa Monica: cinnamon roll, croissant, and pain au chocolate. There are plenty of great croissants a shorter drive from me, but the cinnamon roll here makes it worth the visit. Not at all bready, frosting that’s perfectly sweet, and texturally so fun. Slight crunch from the hardened frosting and then a super moist interior.
Last note! Little Fish finally opened up their Melrose Hill location. More of a sit down spot, though the menu is still quite trim.
Corner Beef Noodle House is a destination for TBNS imo.
I don’t eat beef anymore but someone should get the broth from Corner Beef x one of the Lanzhou spots for noodles. Best of both worlds!
(Lanzhou beef noodles has such a bland taste to me! Growing up Taiwanese-American I love the a soup that is spicy, umami, and a little sweet just like what my po po made!)
I can understand that, but the complexity of a good LanZhou broth can be transcedent…
A beauty! Really interested in trying their Pulpo Sando.
Hiked Circle X Ranch today. I hoped that our two early storms would have fueled the waterfalls, but only one was trickling. Still it was a beautiful hike.
I usually stop at Neptune’s Net on the way home, but it’s more of an experience than a destination so I tried Malibu Brewing’s taproom at the Trancas market complex. Great decision.
Ordered a pint of their American IPA, First Point. Delicious!
Along with it I had their Ahi Burger and fries. So good!
Really nice staff and the meal was excellent. I may never eat at Neptune’s Net again.
Fish with You KTown. Consistently excellent. Healthy too (ChatGPT rated the green peppercorn suan cai a 9/10 in healthiness). My favorite Chinese delivery in LA by a big margin.
Holy Basil Santa Monica
Left overs from the uni canape (for lack of a better term; can’t remember what they called it on the menu) w/ tom yum cream. There were only 2 portions, so I didn’t get one (we were a party of 4) when partner stuffed one into his mouth (and then nearly immediately said, “That was really good”). The tiny portion of cream that I got from one was delish, so I imagine the entire thing must’ve been that much better…. ::sigh::
Lightly poached beef what what I think were pork rinds, fried rice, crab with ginger and scallions. All were terrific. Side sauce accompanying the crab was crack (completely unnecessary for the crab but absolutely wonderful on top of the rice, which was otherwise quite light and “clean” in flavor [and which I thought was a nice counterpoint to the more strongly flavored dishes, although one dining companion thought it was a bit bland]). Ginger scallion on the crab itself was terrific, and I feel like scratches some of my itch when I miss seafood from a Chinese place in the SGV (which to me, is exceedingly high praise).
Not pictured: rad na (which was described as basically pad see ew w/ gravy). It didn’t taste or look much like the pad see ew I’ve had at other Thai places (eg., the noodles were thin). For me, this was the only dish that would be a skip on a return visit. It’s not bad at all; it just didn’t do much for me.
I think several of the dishes were actually brought to the table by Chefs Deau and Yuon.
I think this place was delightful. The only demerits are the acoustics (I had a very difficult time hearing the person taking our order) and that high-quality food ain’t cheap (and needed a bang-bang at a nearby taco truck). For the quality, I do not think the place is expensive.
I was worried that there wouldn’t be enough space for all of the rather good Thai restaurants that seemed to suddenly pop up in West LA/Santa Monica, but I actually think they do fit into different niches rather nicely (eg., Lala Rice as our “everyday” Thai place, w/ Holy Basil being a somewhat more special-occasion type place).
Place was packed was completely full when we left, so I hope they do well here.
Sacrilege.
I was there last night with my wife and parents. Maybe we were sitting next to you! We are so happy to have this place in Santa Monica. No booze yet, but coming. Wednesday meals and lunch also coming soon.
I spoke to Deau and he mentioned how difficult it was working with the city to get the place opened. I truly hope the city manager is able to bring some change and make it easier for businesses to open and stay open here.
Yeah, that’s Santa Monica…
I don’t think I learned anything new here other than the city manager has some big ambitions and Rustic Canyon Fam doesn’t plan on opening new restaurants here (I thought Birdie G’s was planning a relocation in SM).
That’s so sad really. Hopefully the Rustic Canyon group can expand more on the Brentwood side
Had a great dinner at Roasted Duck by Pa Ord. Roasted duck for one with rice and roasted duck noodle soup with egg noodles. They threw in jade noodles for free! I’m used to Chinese roast duck and prefer crispier skin, but this was very good. Moist and flavorful enough that I didn’t really need the dipping sauces. Surprisingly, I liked the soup more than the roast duck alone. It has a similar flavor profile to boat noodles.
Had a slice of pepperoni at Quarter Sheets after. No line at 7:30 PM and every slice and dessert was still in stock! I still adore this restaurant and am eagerly awaiting their summer menu changes… sungold tomato pies and stone fruit sheet cakes!
You’re killing it with the recent posts!
That was totally my take on it, too! Although my partner liked the sweetness.
When were you there and roughly where were you in the restaurant? There was a table next to me that did seem to have some sort of cabbage-y thing, but I only remember 3 people being at that table.
Server said chili chicken was also his fav. We skipped this b/c one of our group is trying to avoid spicy stuff (but loves spice and has a very high tolerance).
