December 2025 Rundown

Not at all (or at least I’ve been lucky.) You can also order online. Maybe they’re mistaking Layla’s line for Jyan’s.

You can also get Jyan’s bagels (and some breads) at the Sunday Farmer’s Market on San Vicente (just west of Bundy).

And, for those who are not familiar w/ the current setup of the Brentwood FM, Jyan Isaac really is located on San Vicente specifically, not on the “main” part of the FM on S. Gretna Green.

The Friday FM in Venice is another (less crowded) way to buy from Jyan Isaac…

New York week

Superiority Burger - creamed kale stuffed shells, tofu fried tofu, the fries (Jesus their fries) and sticky date dessert all banging as well as the burger as always.

Penny - still a great stop. The ice box of seafood delights always delights. Razor clams a highlight. Stuffed squid? Lovely. Wines? Crispy. Crowd? Weirdly finance bros now.

Corima x Rosio Sanchez collab - just a killer dinner t. Only miss maybe the red mullet as my scales weren’t fully crisp. but they were slammed and it’s a popup.

Mission Chinese v3 (maybe 4?) - man I was so out on this place towards the end of its last run. But this iteration in a no frills space with a not try-hard menu slapped. Spice levels were on point - different versions of intense heat across the dishes.

Kabawa - my favorite tied with Corima in NY. We were so full after slamming the goat creole, duck boudin, the gorgeous pepper shrimp, a lovely “mini sips” half pairing - so no trip to bar Kabawa next door for patties but…I love this place. What a vibe.

More next week!

Are we in NY at the same time? :joy: We went to Corima tonight and I thought their spices were a bit subtle and they could have gone harder on the heat. I think our pork was the same dish as you had on the collab and I really enjoyed it.

We’ve gone for more cocktail bars so far. Sip&Guzzle, Schmuck, Double Chicken Please, Bar Contra, Overstory so far. Really enjoying the savory cocktail a lot of these places are doing. Plus some NY pizza from L’Industrie and Scarr’s

Those fries are great. That post made me realize I’d neglected to post about it.

Hah yes! I’m from here and my fam is still here but heading off to the burbs tmrw. Corima never huge on heat (some dishes with chili or mole in the past have had it) but I’ve found them a bit more restrained than the past when they used maybe a bit too many ingredients in each dish. I appreciate their swings and sometimes there are misses but for the price and amt of different things to try on a night it’s my go to.

I wish I liked bar contra more, contra was a defining nyc restaurant and a defining restaurant for my taste when I started to care about food. Fidel from Corima is former contra so explains my love.

No pictures, but I had a jaw droppingly bad lunch today at the Rooftop at the Waldorf Astoria. I know it is just a license agreement or something, but I’m not sure how Jean-Georges can possibly have his name associated with this restaurant.

Was supposed to meet a group for a holiday luncheon, but last minute everyone cancelled due to illness. I was already at the restaurant and starving, and although I have never had a good meal there, I thought “why not? How bad can it be?”

Even though I hadn’t had good experiences at the restaurant in the past, I had spotted a new item on the menu – chicken shwarma. Turned out to be, as I said, jaw droppingly bad. Just some overcooked chicken breast coated in copious amounts of cinnamon, mixed with a tasteless chopped cucumber/tomato hash and a few pickles. No flavor whatsoever, other than the taste of cinnamon. Came with horrible Sysco quality French Fries. The last time I had fries that bad was in a hospital cafeteria.

The wine by the glass list had a bunch of uninteresting wines. I ordered La Chablisienne Chablis La Pierrelée for $26 a glass. Turned out to be one of those very oaky chardonnays that tasted “manufactured.”

Total damage with tip $78. I hate wasting money, and this was basically just like throwing $78 out the window. Would have been happier with a protein bar for lunch . . . And even though somebody else would be paying, I’m secretly hoping the holiday lunch doesn’t get rescheduled because I’m not sure what I would order from the very uninteresting menu (although I know it won’t be the shwarma).

P.S. The restaurant was not full at all and I had no problem getting seated at a table. Even though I thought the food was terrible, I was saddened how empty the restaurant was as I think it speaks not to the food quality (because I don’t think most people other than a tiny minority care about food quality), but to a general economic malaise in the U.S. and to a decline in tourism.

Sorry you had such a bad meal. I’ve never liked the Waldorf Astoria BH when it came to food or beverage - a shame…

Created by Executive Chef Peleg Miron and the award-winning culinary team of Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills, indulge in a seasonally-driven menu that impeccably integrates the tastes of East and West.

Crazy good value at Sonmari silverlake, same owner as temaki society.

Highlight was duck, perfectly crisp, seasoned and tender with perfect marriage of flavor.

hamburger handroll sounds little too much but the on of the best item.

duck, handroll, and some sashimi with sake and beer, you will have great dinner.

they just opened so takes time to settle I guess.

Just a little late to the party. Majordomo. Super expensive (for me) but loved everything about it and honestly compared to 95% of other restaurants I’ve been to recently I didn’t feel swindled. For 6 of us, just over $500 with tax and tip but only 1 drink (Chase benefits cut that down considerably). Happy Holidays to all!

Had a nice trip out to SGV and enjoyed some really delicious and flavorful noodle dishes!

Corner Beef Noodle House - Noodles in XO Sauce

LaoXi Noodle House - Wife special noodles

Bake & Che - Vietnamese dessert spot recommended to me by LaaLaaPan owners. Got their signature cheesecake flan and pandan flan. As well as their doughy taro cookies and some jelly desserts. Great spot! Looks like they also have locations in Westminster and Garden Grove.

Stopped here because lots of other places were closed due to Monday/weird afternoon eating time. Was a hit with my family and I thought it was pretty good as well. I think in the past @JeetKuneBao has mentioned he/she is not a fan. I miss the SGV.

The che (pudding/dessert soups) are where Bake & Che really shine. Do try them next visit.
