Deep Fried Crispy Bao at Hannosuke

Long time lurker only occasional poster (aka Dommy’s Husband)

Today wanted to get a bite to eat before heading to work in Culver City and I was in Marina del Rey. So I stopped by Mitsuwa at the corner of Venice and Centinela to the food court. I got one of my usual things which is the beef soba from Sanuki Santou. Though every time I have it, it makes me miss the former place in that food court that sold something they called country soba, which was a much thicker, buckwheat soba. Plus, I’m liked their broth much better.

Anyway, while waiting for my soba, something at Hannosuke caught my eye. They were offering a deep fried bao. It seemed worth a try.

What made it remarkable was how fluffy the bao was. I haven’t had that one that wasn’t at least a little bit gummy in a very long time. I wonder if they fried it from partially frozen to make it that way. Also, as with anything at Hannosuke, it was fried perfectly. However, the filling to bun ratio could be a little bit better, but it still was decent.

I would not run over there to get this, but if you happen to be in the neighborhood and maybe thinking you might go to Mitsuwa, I would try it.

Maybe I’ll try this to compensate for the rock-hard curry pan that I had at Coco Ichibanya a few wks ago…

Don’t know about the Westside but Nijiya does a really respectable curry pan at $3.50.

Nice find at Hannosuke!
