Did Bill Addison Write A Review Today?

That explains what he’s been doing with his time.

Probably fun for him to use Dr. Pat’s money to travel around CA, hope he had a great time. But for me (already mostly out on BA and LAT in general) this is not particularly compelling.

i wonder if this was assigned to him or if he pushed for it because he got bored with covering la after being eater’s national critic.

I like this as someone who wants to venture out of LA and take advantage of more parts of the state

If you ever read the SFGATE website affiliated with the San Francisco Chronicle, you will find a lot of stories about the Los Angeles area, including food. They even hired Farley Elliot away from LA Eater. And their coverage of Disneyland far exceeds anything you see down here. I think the changing face of newspapers might include broader regionalization than before.

A California 101 list probably brings way more traffic to the web site than a local restaurant review.

Since it’s paywalled, clearly they’re trying to get subscribers statewide.

SFGate opened a full-on LA bureau, which is a bit of a different thing. They didn’t trade out local coverage for more stories from SoCal.

This is clearly a play at a bigger national/regional audience for LAT food, like NYT has for their critics. I get it. But personally, as an Angeleno, I would like more actual reviews of actual restaurants in our city, which the LAT food section (among others) is always saying desperately need supporters, champions, and diners.

And for broader California coverage I’ll look to critics and writers who are local to those areas.

Outside of major cities, local writers aren’t always as hip to what’s good or critical of what’s not so good as spoiled foodies from the big city.

My understanding is that Tejal Rao’s full-time beat for her employer (the NY Times) is California…

She’s California-based but was a “critic at large.”

We’re not bored eating in L.A. why would Addison be? There’s always new things to check out and eat around town and lots more within the immediate region

sounds like it was his idea

Since starting with The Times in late 2018, I’ve written or co-written six annual guides to the 101 Best Restaurants in Los Angeles. Each year, I’ve tinkered with the same thought: What would it be like to take that guiding 101 number and expand it to the whole state?
The idea was partly from experience. Months before moving to Los Angeles, while working as the national critic for Eater, I had joined colleagues in tackling a project naming California’s 38 essential restaurants. Crisscrossing the state then only made me want to see, taste and understand more.

Aren’t the articles for the LA Times already paywalled so I don’t understand how another paywalled article is evidence that they’re trying to get subscribers statewide?

The California 101 is aimed at people statewide. Since it’s paywalled they presumably think it will help attract subscribers statewide.

Not all articles are paywalled, or at least some (tagged “for subscribers”) are behind a paywall that’s harder to defeat.

If I recall correctly the owner wanted the LAT to do a better job in CA as a whole, but I feel like the way to do that is by hiring reporters to cover OC, SD, Central Valley, central coast, and NorCal and not to simply take people off the LA beat.

I still don’t get this argument that the fact that this article was paywalled and tagged for subscribers means that it was written to attract subscribers statewide.

I mean, the paper also paywalled and tagged for subscribers a similar article about the 101 best tacos in Los Angeles. Was that article about the best tacos in LA also meant to attract subscribers statewide because it was also paywalled and tagged for subscribers too?

If you don’t follow my logic I don’t know how to clarify it.

Kiln not being on this list is insane.
