Not that he writes many reviews, but the 101 is coming June 18 so he has to wrap it up soon.
if it’s like last year’s list, the june 101 will be a best-of list of a specific food written by the entire food department. the 101 best restaurant list is still in december.
Right you are. “101 Best Restaurants” in June vs. “101 Best Restaurants in L.A.” in December.
They probably have him doing a travel package on Chicago or Kuala Lumpur or someplace.
Looking back at his author page on the Times site, he’s written 3 reviews this year. Some newsletters, a cookbook blurb, and a martini video.
I do miss the days when this city had multiple interesting, prolific full-time critics. (….. Among other things I miss from the healthier media landscape of yesteryear)
BA did post some Instagram stories from Australia and NorCal recently so at least he appears to still be eating food.

Amen to all that, though while the media landscape generally is bleak, the LA Times is in a particularly precarious position - the paper lost $50 million in 2024, compared to a much smaller ~$20 million loss in 2023 - the delta is completely attributable to the owner being an idiotic sycophant. The long term future of the LA Times is quite bleak.

They’re always featuring old stuff in the recipes and “guides” sections. Though reviews are kind of stupid since they can be out of date. Who knows what’s going on there.
Regarding the J Gold re-treads - I’d guess it’s a way to post a name with good SEO, and not have to pay additional money. Kind of like using B roll.
