Is palette any good from everyone’s past experience?
same, Koi Palace for dinner with several people, though. dim sum is too crazy there.
not bad but i also prefer Koi Palace above it. Palette in the Bay Area is fine and a welcome addition to San Mateo, though there may be better options. it seems like they’re trying to have a broader appeal with the younger generation and that’s done well for them. with that said, i appreciate the next generation trying to continue this kind of food when they could be doing many other things. so i’d want to give them a chance hoping there’s another option in LA.
Thanks definitely seems worth checking out, hopefully early reports are good and not a chef tony flop.
I’ve had both Palette and Dragon Beaux in SF.
Palette is really good and worth it if the cookin and steaming is on point. I would wait a few weeks and see how this plays out in Tustin. Are they bringing one of the top chefs down from the Bay?
Wait a minute, I think it was Dragon Beaux that I went to on the last trip to SF in 2018 or 2019. ::bangs forehand in frustration::
So Palette is less fancy, then?
Obviously my memory is not great, but it wasn’t even the ambiance that was too fancy. I felt like the food was trying too hard, if that makes any sense. I assume I must’ve written some sort of report about that here. Lemme see if I can find it.
Edit: it was Dragon Beaux.
ok ambiance aside…
i was having this discussion with someone recently: if you’re eating dim sum and can only do 5 dishes (say it’s solo, late-night, or as a party of 2 you just want a few bites), what do you order?
for me:
- fried taro dumpling 芋角
- steamed beef tripe 薑蔥牛柏葉
- baked char siu pastry 叉燒酥
- braised chicken feet 凤爪 or braised tofu rolls with bamboo and oyster sauce 鮮竹卷
- cheung fun rice rolls 肠粉 fish or beef
what’re your 5 dishes?
This is for just palette menu items or generally?
oops just generally for dim sum. my experience at Palette was fine; i’m glad it’s in the area when i’m around that part of the Peninsula, but i don’t remember the specific dishes much.
My issue was more w/ the food than the ambiance (I actually liked the ambiance of Dragon Beaux).
My five:
- Cheung fun w/ crueller.
- Rou mi ji
- Turnip pancake (hated this as a kid but am learning to appreciate it more as an adult)
- Dofu hua
- Sesame ball w/ lotus paste
Actually, since this is late night, I’d prob substitute #5 for fried noodles w/ dried scallop, if that’s an option.
The original Koi Palace was awful, but the one in Pleasanton was solid. I wouldn’t go back to Dragon Beaux. Given the raves it used to get I presume it went downhill. I can’t remember the Palette in Hillsdale, I think it was fine.
Depends on the place. E.g. fried taro dumplings suck at most places.
