Made a run to Epicurus today. Overall the selection was good but there were some empty slots on the shelves. The tinned fish section was fully stocked and perhaps has grown even more since the last time I was there a few months ago. Olive oil selection was lighter than usual.
There were a couple items I wanted to get that they did not have, so I had a chat with the woman in the office. She said that someone reported Epicurus to the health department and that they are now having to go through government processes to get certain items back on the shelves. To be clear, this did not sound like anything relating to sanitation or health. Instead, it sounds like red tape regarding the labeling on some of their products that did not previously list ingredients, nutrition information, etc. – products like cut cheeses, certain baking products, and others. She said they are making progress and those items should be back soon. Hoping that is true because I need some of those 100% cacao discs.
Overall a good haul. I hope they can weather the tariff storm.
i hadn’t been to epicurus in nearly a year, and when i finally went back, i was sold a product that had expired almost a month earlier. it clearly had been sitting on the shelf for a while…i would assume this kind of item should have had a much longer shelf life.
From what I have heard it was an illicit hostile takeover. I don’t want to go into details until after the trial.
Full disclosure I consider Hillary, Eric, Tim and Jason to be friends so I am not impartial.
I’m seeing a lot of negative comments from the change. Just to add a counterpoint, I’ve been satisfied with my purchases since the change. Plenty of product in stock. Last time I went, I bought an “expired” jar of trout eggs. They disclosed the expiration and gave me a 30% discount. They were fantastic. I really liked the former staff and the place had a warmer atmosphere with them, but I’m just happy that this place exists and have been satisfied with my purchases. The hard cheese selection was the only thing I found lacking from my last visit.
That + @attran99’s experience is really concerning. Selling expired product + stuff that’s not technically expired but has possibly been improperly stored.
I went a few months ago and did not think new regime was any worse than before.
As for expiration dates, I have always seen a few products there that have “expired”. Considering how random those expiration dates are, I am not sure it matters as long as you exercise some judgement. Improper storage is a problem though…
