i hadn’t been to epicurus in nearly a year, and when i finally went back, i was sold a product that had expired almost a month earlier. it clearly had been sitting on the shelf for a while…i would assume this kind of item should have had a much longer shelf life.

Trial is coming soon. Hopefully things will be righted.

What exactly happened?

From what I have heard it was an illicit hostile takeover. I don’t want to go into details until after the trial.
Full disclosure I consider Hillary, Eric, Tim and Jason to be friends so I am not impartial.

I’m seeing a lot of negative comments from the change. Just to add a counterpoint, I’ve been satisfied with my purchases since the change. Plenty of product in stock. Last time I went, I bought an “expired” jar of trout eggs. They disclosed the expiration and gave me a 30% discount. They were fantastic. I really liked the former staff and the place had a warmer atmosphere with them, but I’m just happy that this place exists and have been satisfied with my purchases. The hard cheese selection was the only thing I found lacking from my last visit.

That + @attran99’s experience is really concerning. Selling expired product + stuff that’s not technically expired but has possibly been improperly stored. :frowning:

Wow, I didn’t realize the lawsuit was still live. Looks like trial is scheduled to start Monday.

I went a few months ago and did not think new regime was any worse than before.
As for expiration dates, I have always seen a few products there that have “expired”. Considering how random those expiration dates are, I am not sure it matters as long as you exercise some judgement. Improper storage is a problem though…

We are finally making some headway through this bureaucracy that is the health department, but we are not quite there yet. It has taken forever. We can’t say for sure who phoned in the complaint, however, we do know, per the health department inspector, it had nothing to do with unsanitary conditions or anyone getting sick from our products. We believe a call was made with the implicit intention to inflict chaos and cause financial harm to our family owned small business.

As far as tariffs go, we are beginning to experience an uptick in prices on some of our beloved products. When our vendors charge us more than we can handle, we are forced to raise our prices. That being said, we are doing our best to minimize the increases.

One long-time and freq poster indicated late last year above that there might be an issue w/ improper storage of food. I hope that someone from Epicurus has seen that post, reached out to her, and rectified whatever might have been causing the problem.

We do our best to remove expired items from our shelves and put them on the discount rack, but sometimes, we miss a few. We’re only human, after all. Please refer to www.cdfa.ca.gov for more information about date labeling. If ever you run across an item that is past its best by date, please let us know. Our customers have the option of purchasing any expired items for a discount and we always give full refunds for any expired item you may have inadvertently purchased.

Epicurus has not had any issues with improperly storing products.

We are pleased that you are happy that we exist and that you have been satisfied with your purchases. We will always offer discounts or refunds for expired items.

I am happy to report that Epicurus Gourmet is ‘Under Former Management’ in other words it is back under the original ownership.

It’s true; Hillary, Eric, Tommy and Matt are back running the show. It’s spotless, shelves are filling, and prices are dropping despite the tariffs.

The backstory is pathetic. As I posted before; the change two years ago was an illicit hostile takeover by a third partner and the business suffered greatly. The third partner even took out a very large fraudulent SBA loan on Epicurus without Hillary and Eric’s knowledge and used none of the funds for the business. The court ruled overwhelmingly in Hillary and Eric’s favor (I have read the decision), and things are looking bad for the third partner as they enter the penalty phase of the trial (he is also being arraigned for criminal contempt in November).

Things are looking up. I am going back to my weekly visits where I happily spend too much money.

Popping in today! Thanks for the update. It was funny to see updates from the now old “new” management. Wasn’t their an issue with cheese past its expiration?

That’s great to hear!

Thanks for the update! Any chance you have a copy of the court’s ruling that you could share?

EDIT: Nevermind, I was able to find and read a copy of the decision from the first phase of trial. Wow, you weren’t kidding, that was a scathing decision. I’m happy that Eric and Hillary have regained control, but I feel terribly seeing what they’ve had to deal with along the way (and continue to have to deal with). I’ll be making a stop in soon to support them.
