Farmers market, currently in season PSA

@paranoidgarliclover Thanks for the tip about R&D. It’s a shame they’re not on the list of vendors for the SaMo FM, but I’ll try to go to Brentwood soon.

Was wondering if you or other FTCers have ever come across an heirloom variety called Champagne white peaches? I tried it about 20 years ago from a now defunct health food store in San Francisco and haven’t come across it since.

@Chowseeker1999 Given the high prices, your sure-fire way to get peak fruit will come in handy!

Do you know of any good cherimoya vendors? I used to frequent one at the Mar Vista FM a few years ago, but haven’t seen them at the Wednesday SaMo FM.

I know they were at SaMo Wed last year. Maybe just not in season yet?

Hi @foodshutterbug,

Cherimoya? Not really, sorry. I’ve passed by a few vendors for these, but unfortunately we’ve never gotten around to trying them from any of the farms yet. Hopefully soon and I’ll report back. Have you tried any that I should avoid? Thanks.

BEVERLY HILLS FARMERS MARKET - SUNDAYS

Bell Peppers & White Corn - Tapia Bros

The Mountain came to TheCookie @ebethsdad! I had planned on stopping at Tapia Bros Farmstand on my next Valley trek, but we happened by the BHFM. And what was the first stand we came upon? Yes!

It’s not that I don’t trust you or anything, hehehe, but I wanted to test your “blows away everything I have had since southern Jersey farmstands. Its even better” opinion. I boiled them for just a few minutes with no tricks (no sugar added to the water) and finished w/just a few pads of unsalted butter, a pinch of crunchy salt & cracked black pepper. Now, Idk anything about southern jersey farmstands, but this is possibly the best corn I’ve ever had. Biting into them the sweet, corn juice popped and squirted all over our faces. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: Impossibly fresh, sweet, crunchy, corn goodness. Will be getting more!

Seascapes - Harry’s Berries

The secret of the BHFM is no more. When folks used to complain about the big markets running out of berries early I could always find baskets and baskets of all varieties at BH even towards closing. No more. They said Gaviotas are now gone by 9am. These Seascapes were tasty, but not tasty enough for the $$$ this time of the season. :smirk:

Cherry Tomatoes & Scallions - Menos Organic Farms

Nice, little, bursts of fresh tomato flavor, some sweet some acidic, all juicy.

Gazpacho - Strawberries, Baby Tomatoes, Green Bell Peppers, Garlic, Fennel, Bread, Salt, Soda Water, Drizzled w/Arbosana EVOO

Sugar Giant Peaches - Tenerelli Orchards

Ambrosia! Incredibly Sweet, Juicy, Peachy! I can’t explain except to say that I wanna’ kiss a Tenerelli for growing a peach this amazing! :kissing_closed_eyes: :two_hearts:

Salad - Baby Kale, Sugar Giants, Avocado, Mint, Scallions, Purple Haze Goat Cheese, Homemade Croutons, Dressing of Oil, Lime, Honey, S&P

O’ Henry Peaches - Tenerelli Orchards

(internet photo) I thought I took a photo but was probably too busy eating them. They’re firm, sweet, juicy, slightly acidic. They have baked dessert w/vanilla ice cream written all over them. I gotta’ find my Peach Bread Pudding recipe!

Happy! Oh… Just Happy!

Thanks, Guys. I thought it would be fun to show what we all do with our picks.

When did you last go, @TheCookie? Everything looks great, but the fruit especially so.

Thanks @attran99.

I went the Sunday before last (15th). If you’re wondering about the fruit, the Tenerelli’s said these particular Peaches are late season, so they may still be around. I think it’s the tail-end of Strawberry season, so who knows?

I was so excited about the Peaches and the Corn that I mistakenly ran over there again last Saturday. Ummm… TheCookie? They’re not there on Saturday!

Happy Fruiting!

Hi @Chowseeker1999 when I was looking for passionfruit at the Wednesday SaMo FM, I happened to find them at the Rincon Del Mar Ranch booth and saw it was the same cherimoya vendor I used to see at Mar Vista Farmers Market a few years ago (they no longer sell at the MVFM).

The passionfruit sold for $9 a pound and were good quality (another vendor was selling overripe ones for $10) - I used your tip and had the vendor choose them for me :slightly_smiling_face:

Rincon Del Mar Ranch’s booth was on the same block as Tamai Farms and also sells at the SaMo Saturday market on Arizona street.

Can’t wait for cherimoya season to start.

Hi @foodshutterbug,

Nice! Thanks for the info; glad they reappeared again. Please let us know how the cherimoyas turn out this year.

August Flames - Tenerelli Orchards

No more Sugar Giants  but I got these smaller, slightly dinged-up August Flames for $2.00 per lb. Thank you! They really are peach artists. A completely different flavor profile. Whereas the SG taste like they are injected with sugar, these AF are firm, sweet, juicy but w/a high-acid content (Ms Tenerelli’s preference). They still have other varieties coming. Looking forward to this Sunday. :peach: :two_hearts:

Tomatoes - Harry’s Berries

HB grows a darn fine Tomato - juicy, mild, low-acid, sweet. I roasted them w/Olive Oil & Purple Haze Goat Cheese.:kissing_heart:

Heirlooms (I think) - Tapia Bros

These have really good, acidic, tomatoey flavor. The kind that have a BLT written all over them. :yum:

More Tapia Bros Corn!

White Balsamic

Pricey, but I  this syrupy, sweet, low-acid, balsamic.

Lemon & Herb Pita Chips - Mom’s Products

I got these because the Guacamole (not pictured) sellers ran out of tortilla chips. Forget the tortilla chips. I’m getting these from now on. Perfect amount of crunch, sea salt, herbs and a surprising amount of real lemon flavor, really delish.

Any tips @Dommy? :slightly_smiling_face:

It’s super easy… I LOVE this one… I got it from my friend and people ALWAYS ask for the recipe when I make it…

Peach Sangria

1 bottle of white wine (I use Woodbridge Chardonnay because it’s decent and cheap)
3/4 cup Peach Schnapps
Splash of Brandy
1/4 cup white sugar
Sliced peaches (frozen works in a pinch) (about a peach worth)
raspberries (again, frozen is okay) (1/2 - 1 cup or so)

Mix all ingredients and let chill in the fridge for a couple of hours.

Really though, you can use it in a classic multifruit sangrias as well. The Schnapps adds a nice caramel fuzzy note that rounds out more sharper flavors in your typical Red Sangria…

Thanks @Dommy. I had a feeling you’d have a good recipe. You’re right about the Peach Schnapps - sweet and “caramel fuzzy” is a great description.

I made this concoction earlier - before receiving your post - with what I had on hand. Pretty tasty.

New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc (tart, tropical, decent, cheap), Peach Schnapps, Fresh Peaches, Rambutan (lychee-like), Lime, Splash of Vodka, Mint.

Hot damn!!! The Lychee addition is inspired!!! The flavor profile is like peach but instead of hitting low… it hits you high… YOM!

Schnapps is totally under rated. If you are ever tempted… get a Ginger Schnapps… I made the PERFECT Jalapeno Margarita recently (Generally I hate spicy cocktails) with the addition of Ginger Schnapps instead of the Grand Mariner…

Thanks @Dommy!!!

I had a bunch of the Lychee and was eating them but not fast enough. They were starting to shrink and turn darker brown, but when I opened them the flesh was fine and they were juicy, sweeter and more condensed than when fresh. They’re kinda’ a pain to get off the seed but worth it.

I agree, Schnapps is underrated. I hadn’t had the Peach in a while and was like “wow this is really tasty”. I am so trying that Ginger Jalapeño Margarita!!!

PSA - The Tenerelli’s said they’ll have Peaches until November. I’ll post my latest soon.

White Nectarines, Small Heirloom Tomatoes, Peppery EVOO & Syrupy, Tart, Sweet, White Balsamic, Kefir Labneh, Micro Shiso, Basil, Mint, Mild Smoked Maldon Salt, Cracked Pepper. 90% FM.

Inspired by Republique. Check it out @PorkyBelly and @Bookwich. Just ignore the smoked salt, Bookwich. I needed something to cut the tart, sour, sweet.

From bright & fresh to a bowl of fruit & vegetable comfort food…

I wish we had had more of these fantastic mixed greens to sop up that soupy nectarine/tomato goodness but we managed with just spoons.

Farms & Stand information and lots of good stuff to follow…

first time trying Finger Limes found at the alhambra farmers market… now i want to get the tree! Ricardo Zarates scallop tiradito with Aji amarillo leche de tigre. No matter what happens to his restaurants, his ceviches and tiraditos are the best in town. Recipe from his book, Fire of Peru.
