Fate of Crenshaw Mall Up in the Air

Had no idea this was happening until I read about it on EaterLA — they picked up on a June 9, 2021 article in Spectrum News online.

Aside from my own personal experiences with redevelopment/displacement in San Francisco’s Japantown/Western Addition during the late ‘60s early ‘70s, I find this story noteworthy since the mall houses Hotville Chicken and Post and Beam.

Props to @matthewkang and EaterLA with this story - I didn’t come across anything on LA Times despite its corporate relationship with Spectrum News.

If there’s a still a community fight to be had, I hope ELA continues coverage.

Late in the traction game, but ABC 7 Los Angeles published this yesterday:

Real bummer. Hope this is done thoughtfully and with consideration given to black-owned businesses and they at least reopen the The Museum of African American Art. I always thought it was pretty cool for Macy’s to give over a whole floor of the store to the museum. That’s how you create goodwill and show that you appreciate the history & identity of the neighborhood you’re profiting from.

Thanks for sharing valuable history of the mall and your cousin’s pictures!

Although Downtown Crenshaw Rising, a community-based group’s bid was rejected by DWS, a Deutsche Bank’s subsidiary (despite being the highest), the sale didn’t go through on July 30th to Harridge Development and there’s a temporary reprieve through the end of this week.

Blame it on the Olympics, Covid, whatever, news hasn’t been picked up so I went to Downtown Crenshaw Rising’s Instagram page and its website to get more info.

I’m not posting links since some FTCers are wary of links, but those interested can easily find it using a search engine by entering “Downtown Crenshaw Rising.”

Thanks @foodshutterbug! I wonder why the sale to HD didn’t go thru. On hold or cancelled?

Hmmmmmm. I worked for the old Broadway Department Store chain back ‘in the day’ and the Crenshaw store was #4 in the chain, so very early in the history. It was on my regular store visit routine for years. Great area, wonderful people. I had no idea the ‘mall’ was now so different.

That location is prime, and the mall has been grossly underutilized and mismanaged for some time. I really hope there will be a full-scale redevelopment with affordable apartments, luxury condominiums and plenty of restaurants and retail, as the area can support it – it’s literally right below multi-million-dollar homes!

I’m so pissed about this outcome.
