February 2022 Rundown

I frequent Pho 45 in La Mirada. It’s pretty similar to the Westminster/Garden Grove location.

Smashburger specialist For The Win has just opened a second location in Glendale, on Brand Blvd. (the original location took over the space on Franklin previously inhabited by Papilles). Really satisfying, craveable burgers and fries. Get the special burger sauce. #EaterLA

+1 Never knew Amoroso was a thing until after I moved out of Philadelphia. Never saw them used at any self respecting hoagie or cheesesteak joint.

Covid friendly Porto’s .

Bonus, price of 1 hipster danish = Porto’s box of 6 count guava & cheese strudel. Hipster food is expensive :disappointed:

Six here. Glad my Girl Scout didn’t have Adventurefuls because I would’ve been all over them - they look so good.

Good to know @J_L! Thanks for the update!

Nice! I’ve been wanting to go with the Whittier fam.

Happy Birthday to Me & my Sis too! Lunch at Manuela in DTLA with the girls and a couple of dudes too.

Bitter Ex (amaro angeleno, yuzuri, lemon, sparkling wine), House Negroni (sipsmith london dry gin, forthave aperitivo, carpano antica sweet vermouth), Dad or Daddy (callisto rum rested with kumquats, macadamia liqueur, Chinola passionfruit, lemon), Nightshade (tequila dahlia, yellow bell pepper, heat, lemon)

The only drinks I tasted were the Dad or Daddy and the House Negroni. I’m not typically a Negroni drinker but I get why this one is so popular - it is especially special.

Cream Biscuits & Col. Newsom’s Aged Country Ham, Steen’s Butter

Cream Biscuits are always a must for us. :hearts:

Smoked Albacore & Carolina Gold Rice Crackers

I was excited to try this. It was good, maybe a little underwhelming but good. Possibly a tad more smoke.

Burrata, Persian Cucumbers, Sungold Tomatoes, Trout Roe, Urfa Vinaigrette, Polenta Toast

Delicious dish - burrata, sweet Persian cukes and subtly briny, very firm, trout roe. Wish there was more of the smokey urfa vinaigrette. :hearts:

Fried Chicken Sandwich, Jalapeño Bread & Butter Pickles, White BBQ Sauce, Brioche Bun

I would add this to the fried chicken sandwich rundown… if we had one. So good!

Ocean Trout Tartare, Red Onion, Capers, Bronze Fennel, Colatura Vinaigrette, Garlic Toast

This was my favorite dish which is a good thing because I ordered it. :hearts: Minor quibble - like a couple other dishes I wish it was dressed a little more, more caper brininess.

Honey Cake w/Mascarpone Cream, Caramel, Honey Glazed Almonds and Mint Stracciatella Ice Cream & Peanut Butter Cookies & Cream Ice Cream

I didn’t try the ice cream but the honey cake was a little too sweet for my taste.

The happy chickens are back from a hiatus at the happy chicken spa!

Even my love of Mayo has its limits.

Good question @hungryhungryhippos. I’ve heard of Mayo or sour cream in batter. Maybe that’s the idea. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Maybe in a frosting for a mayonnaise cake, made using this:

Or even this:

Hah! My cousin puts Mayo in her chocolate cake mix. It’s good, really moist and you don’t actually taste the Mayo.

I think the Creme Egg one was the only sort-of-real product.

There are lots of mayonnaise cake recipes. Mayo’s basically just oil, eggs, and acid, and lots of cake batters have all those anyway.
