A short 45 min Shinkansen ride from Tokyo sits the seaside town of Atami. It’s where many Japanese people go to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Here you have plenty of resorts and ryokans to choose from and town to traverse into where there’s a small omotesando, the beach, or all the attractions around Atami Castle.
On top of being a luxury ryokan, FuFu Atami has a significant dining program. We wanted for nothing. Traditional Japanese breakfast, they got you covered. Snacks and refreshments in your room, not a problem…they’ll stock your fridge anytime you wish. Drinks and the best popsicles I’ve ever had are in each of the public onsens. Evening HH, that’s also an option for you with a selection of light snacks, wines, beers, and non-alcoholic options. Dinners here will knock your socks off.
We were here 2 nights and 2 days. 2 dinners and 2 breakfasts. I felt like the dining team here really works hard to make sure that you never leave the dining room hungry. I will admit that breakfast was so amazing each day, oftentimes, I would not be hungry until dinner. Each night, I felt stuffed to the gills for dinner.
Yes, you can book your stay here without meals…but why would you? While breakfast is a traditional Japanese set up, dinner you have your choice between kaiseki, sushi or teppanyaki. You will need to indicate your choice(s) prior to arrival. Upon arrival to the single ryokan restaurant, you are whisked away to your own private dining room where you are immersed into their culinary program. You will want for nothing. Fair warning, they really do try, but this particular facility is not stocked with a lot of English-speaking personnel. The hard working folks will try to accommodate you, but be prepared to have Google Translate on the ready. We always felt welcome.
On to the food, it’s been a few months so there will be more photos than commentary, but happy to respond to any questions.
Kaiseki Dinner:
Our first meal here was quite the impression. I think having been to Hayato (LA), I was able to appreciate the experience even more here. Dinner was hands down amazing. We were stuffed silly and I still regret not being able to eat more of the kamameshi…and feel dumb not asking the team to have them turn the leftovers into onigiri to take back to our room.
I did opt to try both sake pairings.
We added the Matsutake mushroom tempura and SO chose the Waygu replacement to the grilled salmon. Everything was delicious.
Isn’t that crazy this was just the opener? Since it was October, there were maple branches/leaves decorating the plates. I was told that this was to celebrate autumn.
Having fresh wasabi is a joy that I will never forget to appreciate. Also freshly made pickled ginger.
I could not be happier. Stuffed to the gills happy. The team was even nice enough to help celebrate our anniversary.

Breakfast #1:
Fueled me for morning of sightseeing at the Atami Castle complex and an afternoon of checking out the onsens.
Teppanyaki Dinner:
I wanted sushi, but I had to make concessions. So teppanyaki it was. Very good. But probably not sushi good. We had a great time with our own personal teppanyaki chef.
Last Breakfast:
Nothing made me more sad than having to leave this wonderful place. I’m pretty sure breakfast was bigger this particular morning than the prior. There seemed to be more of everything.
