Fujianese Style Restaurant Opens In San Gabriel

Another Fujianese (only the second in the SGV) style Chinese restaurant opens up in the San Gabriel Valley. Shaxian Street Food on Valley Blvd. in San Gabriel replaces Gui Lin Noodles in the small space in front of Hawaii Market that once housed a confectionery store.

Like its only San Gabriel Valley Fujianese compatriot, Zheng Shang Xian in Rosemead, Shaxian Street Food has a limited menu, so we still have yet to see the full range of Fujianese food in the Los Angeles area. Even though the selection is small, the noodle, dumpling, and other dishes at Shaxian Street Food are a good introduction to the cuisines and a welcome alternative to the local Fujianese population.

While Fujianese restaurants are plentiful in the eastern US, and particularly New York City, they are a curiosity in Los Angeles. That’s because New York is the center of a multi state Fujianese restaurant empire that only extends as far as New York Chinatown based bus lines travel , as many Fujianese restaurant workers do not have the needed ID to travel by bus or train.

How come the menu says it’s Hunan?

What does 党德 mean?

壹 oh my, I’ll interpret that as being silly.

Peony: I think “ 湖南常德” here means Changde city of Hunan Province

Apparently Shaxian snack food is a subcategory of Fujianese food that is becoming popular elsewhere in China and abroad, and this noodle may be one of those items.
