Dana Slatkin (owner/chef of Violet Bistro and The Wilkes) was serving at Alex’s Lemonade Stand two weeks ago. Burgers, if I recall correctly. She said “soon.”
Terroni doesn’t look as close to opening - but getting closer.
Area is heating up
Have you been since the ?other ?head chef left? Still good?
I go about 1-2/year and don’t know when any chef there came or went. It’s always “fine” for me. Nothing is especially excellent or terrible. Maybe the chip-like fries get close to excellent. Overpriced, but what isn’t anymore?
My parents love this place so I also end up here a few times a year. It’s totally fine but definitely not a place to go out of your way for if you are on this board.
Ha. My parents love it too. Just one of those places that parents love!
I think the steak frites dish was excellent when the old chef was in charge, and is still excellent with the new chef. I generally don’t order anything else at least entree wise.
I went a couple times to the original PP and thought it had potential but they burn the pizza…I like kinda well done pizza but this was burnt! when I mentioned to the cashier, she seemed a bit scared to say anything to the pizza maker(not sure I’ll call him a pizzaiolo yet) guess I’ll check it out but I dont see it as NYstyle pizza!
Exterior signage is up for For the Win in the former Casa de Campo spot on Barrington. A little birdie tells me they’re aiming to open within the next month.
Also on Barrington, but south of San Vicente, Sor Tino’s 15 year run is soon coming to an end. Their lease is up for renewal and the landlord jacked up the rent to a silly amount.
Santos is gunning squarely for the Westside, as another For The Win location is now also open next to Tacos Tu Madre on Westwood Blvd (just a bit south of Santa Monica Blvd)…
Huh no kidding. That’s pretty close, at least as the crow flies. But it’s also far enough, I think? Crossing the 405 can be a daunting task during the week.
Is it any good? I’ve tried some of the other smash spots - Heavy Handed (meh), Win~Dow (great), Palms & Patties (good)…but never For the Win.
In other Brentwood intel, Matū Kai has (finally!) commenced lunch service. Best cheesesteak I have ever had by far.
I just noticed that yesterday and was shocked. How long has it been there?
About a week or two…
it’s the Prime Pizza of smash burgers. Are they the best? probably not. But they might be the best in the neighborhood that you find yourself in.
Former Feast from the East location?
Is Apple Pan a smashburger? It’s like a 2 min drive from this location. Maybe I should do a bang-bang…. ![]()
don’t think so? Maybe I’m wrong though, I think of it as a diner burger
Silly question, but that would be a thicker type of patty?
Maybe the same size just not pressed down for the extra crust
I think Feast from the East is still there, they just sub-divided the space.
Apple Pan is not a smash burger, which I think specifically requires you start with a ball of meat and smash it with a spatula on the griddle. IIRC, Johnny Rocket’s was actually a smashburger
needs the lacy edges to be a true smashburger imo.
Speaking of burgers I dropped into Darling on Saturday night and had the Dry Aged Steak burger. I’m not a burger expert, rarely eat them, but this one just rang different. Was quite tasty. I guess they’re on their second month menu as the dishes were different than represented on their website but it was on of my wife’s favorite dinners of the year. (she did not get to go to Kato)
