crispy pizza like… California pizza kitchen style? ehh
California Pizza Kitchen hardly invented crisp pizza.
Reminds me of the joke (that has been misattributed to John Lennon) when asked, “Is Ringo Starr the best drummer in the world?”
“Ringo wasn’t the best drummer in the world… Let’s face it, he wasn’t even the best drummer in The Beatles”
Why do I feel like this message board was the inspiration for this re-review? It definitely got me thinking about Gjelina again the last few months. Well deserved!
Gjelina has very nice pizza, but Pizzeria Sei is just in another category. Odd.
There are many kinds of pizza, and Gelina and Sei are making different ones. If you think one is way better than the other, it’s more about your preference than their quality.
disagree. I suppose though you can say it’s like comparing flank steak to filet mignon if we are talking quality.
the California pizza kitchen analogy we discussed earlier seems appropriate.
Maybe you can elaborate on that? What are the qualities that make a filet better than a flank steak to you? There are some applications where I would prefer a flank steak because of it’s stronger flavor. And frankly for a high quality steak I prefer rib eye, or especially the rib cap, to filet because of the better flavor, fat content, and high level of tenderness. Which is the to say: I agree with Robert, it’s more of a preference and not everyone would like the same thing. So I don’t know that you can say, objectively, one is simply better than the other.
I think I always prefer flank over filet lol
the steak analogy was a bad one. Was just trying to make a point. I agree with all your points.
But in regards to the pizzas, to me there is a huge difference in quality. I guess it’s like saying (in more exaggerated terms) TO ME it’s like comparing McDonald’s fries to Majordomo fries. Yes you can have a matter of preference, but there is no comparison in quality imo.
(again a note that I LOVED Gjelina and their veggies/apps/other courses but didn’t find their pizza that special at all)
Peony and I both prefer the pizza at Gjelina to that at Pizzeria Sei. I don’t agree Gjelina is lower quality. It’s two very different styles. If anything I think Gjelina uses better ingredients. I don’t get the dogmatic position here.
If Gjelina were trying to make the same style of pizza as Sei, they’d be doing a much worse job of it, but they’re not.
I was lucky enough to have an almost perfect meal here last night. Great company (party of 7) that let me do the ordering and the restaurant did a great job or coursing it out. We got a whole bunch of dishes and there wasn’t a single miss the whole night. The wine prices seemed oddly reasonable which was nice as we made our way through a few bottles. The only things that were less than stellar were the desserts so next time I’ll probably just walk a block and grab Salt & Straw afterwards.
I’m definitely missing a couple items, but here’s a few of the things we ate:
Duck Liver Pate
Grilled Romaine
Heirloom Tomatoes
Summer Squash
Carrots
Japanese Eggplant
Beef Tartare
Prawns (sauce was great for pizza crust)
Ricotta Gnocchi
Agnolotti
Saffron Spaghetti
Duck Confit
Lamb Ribs
Sausage and Kraut
Pork Belly
Four Onion Pizza
Squash Blossom Pizza
Chorizo Pizza
Guanciale Pizza
