a friend is dropping a kid off to harvey mudd and asks for recs for good eats in the immediate vicinity. any suggestions for places no more than 15 minutes away from mudd? ideally, places good for 1-2 people and nothing too expensive.
-Mariscos Jalisco in Pomona. Became famous for doling out quality ceviche, tostadas, and fried tacos from their L.A.-based food trucks, Pomona was somehow blessed as the location of their first brick and mortar location. Brave the sketchiness, the shrimp tacos alone are well worth it.
-Back Abbey used to have a decent house burger, fries, and a great beer selection. Can’t fully vouch for it now since I haven’t been in a while.
Something a Claremont College kid and his folks might enjoy:
-Uno Tre Otto
-Viva Madrid!
Sanamluang may very well be the most decent Thai in the area. Not a bad choice.
We strolled into Tutti Mangia over the weekend. The chow pups said that the calamari was the best they’ve ever had. A light, seasoned batter with super tender calamari rings and tentacles. The remoulade was solid.
I didn’t love the steak tartare…the steak was exceptionally cut and I love that it was served with fresh potato chips for that steak frites play, but the seasoning and acidity needed more pinch. The chowpup enjoyed his first tartare.
Best veal chop I’ve had in quite some time. Cooked and seasoned to perfection. Fun pomegranate-cranberry sauce, but that polenta would have been better had it been mashed potatoes instead.
