I will start off my London, Ontario thread with a take-out order from Pizza Quest.
This was their Mediterranean, with tomatoes, ripe olives, onion, mozzarella, feta (lots of feta) and dried oregano. Just under $25 CAD for the large.
I had to move some shelves on the door of my counter-depth fridge to fit the Large Pizza inside the fridge. The box is balancing on 2 containers of yogurt.
Mental note: medium boxes will fit without having to move the shelves around.
Take-out from Jay’s Garden, one of the few places still serving Chinese Canadian food in London, ON. It’s a small take-out restaurant in a suburban strip plaza with short hours.
Pizza from Lord Gainsborough in London, Ontario. This family restaurant recently changed ownership. The previous owner was an old Greek man who ran the resto for decades, and the pizza was a big draw. He taught the new owners all his recipes. The reviews online are positive.
The slices from the 3 different pizzas look the same in the photo because this place tops the toppings on the pizza with cheese. This is similar to Saskatchewan-style pizza. The crust isn’t quite like Saskatchewan-style.
I ordered vegetarian (tomato, mushroom, onion), Canadian (pepperoni, bacon, mushroom), and bacon + pineapple pizzas.
The tomato sauce was underseasoned for us. It was okay but we probably won’t order the pizza again.
We like the pizza at Porcino’s, Madre, Cito, Byron Pizza, Pizza Quest and Pazoon more than Lord Gainsborough’s pizzas today. I also want to try Piero’s and Ellie’s.
First time to visit Pho D’Lux. The menu is smaller than most traditional pho joints.
Pho D’Lux has My Tho soup on the menu which has become harder to find at pho joints in LdnOnt and Toronto. Nice version. The photo is of the seafood and noodles before I added the broth at home.
I’ll be back to try more dishes.
Generous portions, so I saved at least half of everything for tomorrow’s lunch.
Sweet Onion Grill is Greek-run family restaurant in Wortley Village, open for lunch and dinner daily, mostly serving things like burgers and salads. We stopped by for a weekday lunch on Thu. I ordered the gyro in a pita and my DC had their French Onion Soup for lunch. I will try their cheeseburger another time.
The last Friday of each month, they offer a Greek night with homestyle cooking.
This was the first time for me to try the Greek night food.
It was pretty good. I would say equivalent to a mid-range Greek Restaurant on the Danforth in Toronto, or the food served at most Greek cultural clubs or churches during their summer festivals.
I ordered 2 orders of dolmades, the spanakopita, the soutzoukakia (meatballs in a spiced tomato sauce, a specialty of Greeks who left Asia Minor after the Population Exchange in 1922), and the moussaka.
I make a lot of these dishes at home, and there are a lot of variations when it comes to these dishes. I sort of have some of these dishes, when I make them, tailored to how my family likes them. It’s nice to try other families’ versions.
