Helms Bakery Complex -- new eatery coming?

Was at Pasta Sisters tonight (delicious, as usual), and I saw a change-in-business sign next to Rejuvenation that said a restaurant/bakery/retail business was coming (w/ basement storage and a mezzanine).

Anyone know what’s going in there?

Probably the (very) long-anticipated Sherry Yard venue in partnership with Sang Yoon.

Wow, you weren’t joking. It was already long-anticipated in late 2016!

No that’s not happening anymore, its been pretty much cancelled for a while now but they never announced it.

Bummer. I’d love to see her with her own pastry place. Prolly less hassle to do consulting and catering though

:sleepy:

Is Sherry Yard still working with Tuck Room Tavern?

This will be a good addition to the area

Early dinner at the new iteration of Hayama (now ‘x Watami’)

Really nice space. Lots of blonde wood, high ceilings, big windows soft lighting. We got there at 615 and there was already a nice crowd. By the time we left folks were waiting for tables.

We started with spinach gomae, sunomono, spicy saucy carrots & chips, and eggplant with red miso. The carrots & chips were an unexpected hit. A little kick from some spicy mayo, lots of crunch from the chips and carrots.

Two cut rolls, vegetable and spicy tuna. These aren’t really my thing, but my fellow diner is into them. I had bites, I didn’t think they were at all bad.

Vegetable skewers, chicken scallion skewers, and a very slurpable yuzu cream sauce. I could drown in that cream sauce. I loved it.

Some sushi: Two pieces of hamachi, two kanpachi. I got a picture of one piece (I’m sorry). At this point I was a little into my cups and the camera wasn’t a priority. But they were good! I don’t have the sensibility of some folks (I’m trying) about rice packing quality, vinegar ratios, knife work… but this was far from the worst fish I’ve ever eaten.

I think it was $147 (incl. $45, I think, for 300mL of sake) before tip. I had a great time and can’t wait to go back – the Sugiura family was working the room, full of old regulars from Sawtelle days. It was very warm and convivial. Service was a little patchy. We waited a while to get our order in, but everything flowed pretty well from there. Some other tables within earshot did not have great experiences (long waits, missed dishes).

Tacos Tamix on Venice to break up the ride home. Two al pastor. Tortillas not made to order, but not bad for dessert.

I always thought of Bar Hayama as a good date place or someplace to catch up with friends. You can have something good but you don’t have to spend a lot of time thinking about it. Can’t wait to go and check it out!

I was there also for the grand open. The yakitori was good, but I’m gonna wait a bit before going back…
