We visited San Jose del Cabo for a week because summer started for the chow pup. We enjoy sjd over Cabo because Cabo generally feels like oc with a side of partying whereas sjd feels like a quiet smallish town with both historical character and local flavor.
We ended up staying at acre which is nice but they do have weddings often onsite that can get pretty rowdy and make the property noisy late at night.
For the first night I bought a kilo of carne asada grilled over mesquite from a local taqueria, taqueria Guamuchil. It was excellent they spread asiento on the flour tortillas giving them a buttery flavor and texture. There seems to be a lot of Sinaloan influence in Cabo since it’s just on the other side of the sea of Cortez, they dress their tacos with cabbage and generally exclude the onion and cilantro.
Bought some of the best Harina tortillas got off the comal at tortilleria lulu. So good hot and fresh eaten plain reminiscent of cong yo bing.
Pollo Al carbon from el comps guero. A workman meal that is both parts filling and delicious. Making small tacos and rice bowls with the different salsas and and guacamole
A solid but unmemorable dinner at traspatio. Highlights being the bone marrow, grilled vegetables and the mushrooms.
Marabajo a small cevicheria in the village of la choya near acre. This place was so good we went twice. They buy fresh fish daily from the fisherman and a fisherman came up to sell mahi mahi and grouper while I was there. They make the ceviche fresh chopping the veggies once you order. I would eat here every day if I could so fresh and so delicious will be back in the future
Taqueria el paisa a popular spot with both locals and expats. I think it’s popular for its nice buildout and the huge salsa bar. I found it pretty meh, pastor was better but the asada “sirloin” was super dry.
Just goes to show that popular does not always equal good food
Tacos el memo. Freshly fried shrimp and fish tacos. Not as good as the one in northern Baja but they were well made and piping hot. Also they also allow you to dress if your way with a lot of different salsas and creams. Suprisingly for an ocean town San Jose del Cabo does not have a plethora of seafood restaurants.
They make their own kombucha and I got try cebada for the first time it was very earthy but I enjoyed it.
Birria jaliscience. I made homemade queso tacos. Their consommé was excellent beefy and nuanced not overly spicy or oily like a lot of places here. They’ve won a lot of awards with trophies being displayed throughout the store and we thoroughly enjoyed their Birria. Their chivo was preferred over the beef for us but both were very good.
Acre was such a cool property. Had I known how interesting it was, I’d have wanted to get there earlier for a tour during daylight before dinner a couple of years ago.
Is the weather much different being in the city rather than a beachside resort?
I love how you went to so many local places this trip!
I am generally not a huge fan of “Michelin” dining or over the top gastronomy, once or twice a trip probably at most for me unless its somewhere exceptional like basque country or tokyo. I know save for a few exceptions my favorite food experiences in LA do not align with the international jetsetting crowd. What brings me most joy in travelling and eating food is going to the spots that the locals enjoy whether it be to go hole in the walls, food stands, or places where locals like to dine in.
You should definitely check out Acre during the day the grounds are very nice, in terms of temp im sure its slightly hotter by a few degrees than the ocean but everywhere is universally hot in cabo during the summer. They have relatively family friendly amenities and it is very uncrowded, I will say that if your villa or hacienda is near the wedding venue area it can get quite loud at night as they host a lot of weddings. Otherwise we really enjoyed our stay.
Come e casa an excellent Italian restaurant in old town sjd. Pastas are all mostly made fresh in house. Pizza was made with sourdough. They were kind enough to let my chow pup play with dough on the bar while she was watching ppl cook in the open air pasta kitchen. Highlights included the pizza, eggplant parm, shrimp tortellini. Will definitely be coming again the next time we go to sjd.
we walked around their Thursday set walk after and procured some trinkets and souvenirs from the local vendors.
We did two dinners at acre. Their food is reminiscent of a bestia/gjelina combo. Excellent ingredients paired with good technique packaged in a fun and entertaining manner with trendy vibes. It’s rare that you have this level of cooking on premise at a hotel which makes the stay much more enjoyable not having to figure out dinner every night or be left with subpar options at your hotel.
