I haven't eaten there, but here's my opinion anyway

yes, i wouldn’t consider it a bowl size.

I’m a big fan of QPR and getting value for what I’m spending but so far I’m seeing a lot of complaining with anyone having actually tried the food. This reminds me of Gjusta -last time I went I thought did I really just spend 60ish for a sandwich, cookie, side and a coffee?!? But you know what, It’s good and I don’t do it very often so it’s worth it.

Not going to run to try it but if I’m going to be it that area anyway I’m down to try it once and see for myself.

most reasonable reddit take

Yeah, I’d be willing to try OTHER things on the menu.

The main barrier right now is the 3-hr wait. I’m not waiting that long for anything, anywhere, no matter how tasty. Hopefully, wait times will go in the future to something more reasonable.

Im 100% going to try it and report back. I’m curious. I take more of an issue with their marketing tactics. FWIW, later in that same Reddit thread someone complains that they completely bungled the patty melt so YMMV.

funny since someone in the thread mentioned them too (but in then negative),

“I don’t mind splurging but when your prices are making a breakfast or lunch at Gjusta in Venice a money-saving option it’s gone a bridge too far! …the coffee is under 3 dollars so thanks for that lol. Nancy if you are reading this cannot believe I’m saying this but please LOWER the prices to the already ridiculous but not completely insane Gjusta range.”

+$8.50 for fries– by the time you add in something to drink, tax and tip – it’s $50+…. I love a good patty melt, but it would really have to be outstanding for that higher price point. The Cassell’s patty melt is really solid for the price and maybe a mile east of Larchmont. I’ll prob check out M&H when the lines die down and maybe try the meatloaf or something.

I mean that’s not wrong, the value proposition for everyone is different. For me, you can see all the work and labor that goes into their food right there. And the taste is pretty consistent.. While you’ll (probably) never see me posting a 350$ omakase a 60 $ lunch is an affordable luxury.

anything with Nancy Silverton im interested in, the media blitz though has been tone deaf which is nauseating. Phil should probably just have Nancy take over interviews so he avoids any more quotes like ^^^ lol.

im sure its delicious

You do have some optionally here as you could also just grab a seat at the bar and drink some coffee and see what looks good. I 100% would order based on vibes.

This 100% could fall into the category of a splurge lunch if the food is good (and assuming no absurdly long waits). Go to right now is Matu at lunch.

Still never been, I guess I should try it for lunch since I’m within walking distance of the Matu Kai in Brentwood. Just not really a big steakhouse person

same.. apparently cheesesteak at Matu is $24??

Yes. There was a bit an uproar here about it (IIRC). But folks tried it and said that it was actually quite good. And it’s wagyu. And a side of housemade potato chips is only $4, so you can get a sandwich and the side for about the same price as the Max & Helen’s solo patty melt (running and ducking).

But I don’t think Matu talked about making things for the masses, so….

If the other stuff’s delicious, I’m willing to give it a try and to skip the patty melt (esp if it was overcooked! Argh).

Pricing is going to be what it’s going to be everyone’s costs are unfortunately going up, but messaging definitely seems out of touch in a “let them eat cake” type of way

Just to be difficult (and contrary) I will say a diner burger isn’t really supposed to be mid rare so that criticism from reddit really makes me shrug my shoulders. As a Patty Melt purist I am much more worried about the ‘spicy mayo’ and I notice there is no mention of cheese. The only appropriate cheese for a patty melt is swiss. Lol I don’t know why a Patty melt makes me crazy but neither Pann’s nor Cassel’s is it.

Good to hear you like the Matu Philly cheesesteak I know the price would have bothered you if the flavor/quality wasn’t there!

$24. “‘wit’ grilled onions” and long hot peppers or build your own for $22 [plus $1 to make it “‘wit’ grilled onions” and plus $2 if you just want to add the peppers]..

Oh, I haven’t tried the Matu cheesesteak myself! I was just looking at the menu (to see if they offered sides and to confirm it was wagyu). My memory is that the reviews here for it here were good.

I don’t have patty melts often, so now I have to think about how I think I like them, after reading your post! I def don’t expect medium rare. I think it’s okay for it to be on the firmer side, but I don’t think I’d want well-done.

I’m not sure what kind of cheese I expect on it! I’ll have to think more about that. Do you think cheddar is too sharp?

Chris Kronner’s patty melt’s the best I’ve had, and he uses cheddar.

The original was from Tiny Naylor’s back in the day. An LA original. This recipe sums it up for me. Used to get them at the Santa Monica Hospital commissary as a candy striper back in the 90’s . So good!
