@hppzz review forthcoming?
Just went tonight for soft open. I think Jade Rabbit represents a fantastic (and much needed) concept - Think Panda Express convenience but with healthier and much higher-level execution, all while somehow maintaining a very affordable price. It is for the Everyman, the Everyfamily, and their collective wallets. I wish Chef Bryant and team JR the best in this venture.
Did you get any insight into the 1+ year of delays that’s been alluded to I think both in the Eater piece and on here? Curious what held them up so long.
Build out issues, per Chef Bryant…
completely agree with @J_L. Jade Rabbit nails this concept of quick service American Chinese food (panda express) with the more upscale chef driven menu that is incredibly affordable. The QPR is through the roof (regular portions start under $13) and such a good deal compared to similar high end quick serve like urban plates.
regular portion with 2 bases, 2 vegs and 1 main for $12.90. Garlic toast extra.
I am a fan of cassia and spice table so take that for what it’s worth, but everything we tasted had no business being THAT good given the concept—it’s no surprise of course with Bryant Ng’s pedigree. Every item seems well thought out for this concept and well executed.
highlights were the chicken. The Sichuan spicy chicken had a great level of heat and crispyness and the orange (mango) chicken was not overly saucy or cloyingly sweet. The veggies were also a highlight esp the slaw which had great acidity. The curry potatoes and chickpeas were also very good.
Almond roca cookie and mango pudding, both very good.
Thank goodness no fortune cookies here, but you can get great merch.
It’s not a destination type of restaurant but one that I wish would be in my hometown.
hope they can sustain these prices, it’s cheaper than panda right now.
I’m beginning to think menu prices are strategically priced low at opening to attract customers, a la residential real estate. Just look at the $ change at Elec Bleu, Open a few weeks and already the chix is $39, starting at $26 (4 increases).
do they have hours of operation yet? unfortunately it was closed when I drove by yesterday, womp womp! I got too eager ![]()
9/2 is official open
My understanding is that they preferred for the opening date to not be posted b/c they are wanting a slower ramp up.
[some weirdness I have to add in to make my post different from a previous one]
Saw an open sign when I drove by today. Probably will go tomorrow!
Went tonight, had a lovely meal. My better half got the orange mango chicken, I got the beef & broccoli. Both well cooked and flavored, though I give a slight edge to the beef. Not sure what cut of beef they’re using, but was tender with just a hint of fat. I thought both the lo mein and fried rice worked nicely as bases. I would have liked a little more seasoning on the fried rice. The scallion garlic cheese toast was interesting and tasty but probably not essential. The almond chocolate chip cookie, on the other hand…phenomenal.
Lots of confused people struggling to place an order even with the instructions posted clearly on a monitor and on printed menus (2 bases, 2 veggies, 1 main). Poor staff patiently walking them through the whole thing.
It was funny watching the staff double and triple check before they let people order the “spicy Chinese broccoli”, which they made clear was extremely spicy. In reality, it’s not that spicy but it does have Szechuan peppercorn, so I imagine there have been a few incidents of unsuspecting customers freaking out when their mouth got all tingly.
Parking is a bit of a crapshoot, as St John’s is right next door so it can be a fight to get a meter spot.
Interior is like a nicer, more homey fast casual spot. It feels welcoming rather than sterile.
Delicious food at unbelievably reasonable prices. Such a rarity for LA but particularly the west side. Fantastic addition to the neighborhood. Will definitely be adding this into my standard dinner rotation.
Sizzler’s was not a big part of your childhood, I take it.
Amazingly I’ve never been to a Sizzler, though I muse about going at least once a year. I take it that the scallion cheese toast is a riff on a classic Sizzler menu item?
Yes, the Sizzler’s cheese toast! So many of us (I think esp of a certain generation) adored that toast. ![]()
I noted this in another post. It’s a short walk from the Bergamot E Line Station. You can work off your cookie a little bit.
Sizzler CT brings back fond memories ( along with Malibu Chicken). Cheese toast was around long before Sizzler though. I recall Michael’s of Los Feliz had a pretty awesome version.
Agree. And during a pre-opening tasting I mentioned this to chef Bryant. He told me that its a very delicate balance that he is working on getting right. Since the fried rice is used as a base for the bowls (with other salty dishes on top) if he over flavors/salts it, the whole thing becomes too salty.
Lunch today. Easy to order — and I had questions — everyone was very patient and friendly (I couldn’t hear the answers through the thick plexiglass, it became a group interpretation with others in line which was funny).
Since I ordered takeout, I didn’t want rice (errands, it turns toxic quickly). Got just Chow Mein with Beef Broccoli. They charged it as a kids order ($10) and I have leftovers for dinner, even. Paired with that incredible cilantro/mayo sauce from Cassia it’s absolutely divine. Loved every bite.
Very, very low probability. Reheated rice might be actually beneficial from a nutritional point as it has lower calorie count compared to fresh, warm rice
