Javier Cabral (of Munchies): "This Is Why LA’s Mexican Food Is Still Not the Best In the US"

I liked those tortillas with flowers pressed in them that Sedlar had at Rivera.

They where pretty… but they really didn’t taste like much and could not even rolled up properly (The bougie Mexican way to use tortillas). The ones at Broken Spanish are much better.

–Dommy!

alex stupak (NY’er) said he fell in love with “fresh” tortillas at La Parilla

what does this all mean?

Seems like the article’s really saying that LA may have the best Mexican food in the US because some people are making fresh tortillas from good masa. That’s not unique to LA, though. El Molino Central in Sonoma has been doing it for years (originally just as a farmers market stand).

There are actually a lot of mediocre tortillas in Mexico.

I thought they were tasty with the avocado butter slathered on them.

Is she saying Munchies (NY’er) is wrong? iunno… that does not sit well with the “NY is the best” trope.

There are also a lot of shitty pizza in NYC, a lot of shitty Chinese food in China… I think I’m going to go add bourbon to the eggnog now and decompress from this drama.

Which egg nog do you recommend? (I’ve got the bourbon covered.)

This should fit the bill. Errrthang elote.

i’m going to agree with tony here. there’s lots of shitty everywhere. one of the main reasons i drink.

How can it be anything other than Brougiere’s?

Brougiere’s has to be meant for mixing because of its amped up flavors, sweetness and fat. Drinking it straight? No way.

Are you giving me homework???

I’ve eaten many meals at many great places. So many that I’ve probably forgotten more great meals than I can remember offhand. I have my spots I go to for this and that… but rather than trying to sum up dozens of great restaurants across an entire city, how about you tell me what you like to eat and I’ll tell you where I go.

If you want to make the general claim, then it’s on you to submit the evidence I believe?

I guess just thinking of a few particular ones I would like to find renditions of:

La Tortilleria Azteca
Lupe’s #2
Chichen Itza
Super Torta’s D.F.
Tire Shop Taqueria
Los Originales Tacos Arabes de Puebla
ConiSeafood
Taqueria Los Anaya
El Parian
Tacos Leo
Aqui es Texcoco
Burritos La Palma
Mariscos Jalisco
Mexicali Taco Co.
Tacos Cuernavaca
Tacos Quetzacoatl
Cielito Lindo

(Guerilla Tacos, Corazon y Miel, & Broken Spanish on the higher end, might not count)

Looking forward to trying better versions of all of them!

Ate at Empellon al Pastor tonight. Can confirm the tortillas taste good. No metal

No, actually in everyday discourse I, or anyone else, can make a general claim without having to catalog every restaurant I like. You can take it for what it’s worth.

You seem to be saying there has to be a superior analogue to every great Mexican place in LA? Yes some of those places have analogues in the OC. There are places in the OC that might not have an analogue in LA. But while it would be sufficient to prove my point, it’s not necessary to have an analogue for each place – it’s the overall food scene that’s at issue.

LA has killer Mexican food, no doubt. Itza is a phenomenal restaurant, love it. Coni’s is probably the best mariscos I’ve had outside Mexico. Many of those places I’ve never tried. I’ve eaten so much Mexican food in OC I can’t even keep track of it all, I’m always trying new places and I haven’t even scratched the surface.

My “evidence” to support my claim is just the kind appropriate for everyday discussion – anecdotal though it may be. We’re not in food court arguing before an en banc panel of appellate food judges. Here’s my evidence – I ate a lot of Mexican in LA, I’ve eaten a lot in OC, and I ain’t hurrying back to LA for the Mexican – I like it better here.

For the food court record, I did say “any PART of LA” – if you have to drive 890 nautical miles to visit all those restaurants, it’s not quite the same as having a thousand restaurants in a five square mile zone.

  1. This is not general discourse, this is a specialized food forum where people come to dicuss food-related topics above the general discourse that most people have.

  2. In general discourse, if you make a claim and provide zero evidence for the truth of your claim, I don’t think you should be surprised if you are lambasted, as you’ve violated the implict rules of conversation, no matter how general.

  3. “You seem to be saying there has to be a superior analogue to every great Mexican place in LA?” You are the one who claimed there would be a better analog for all of the amazing places in LA. So now you’re welshing on that claim I guess? But absolutely, if you are going to claim IN GENERAL that an area is better than another, then it better be able to offer better food in at least a majority of the categories that the area it is supposedly better than excels at.

  4. “But while it would be sufficient to prove my point, it’s not necessary to have an analogue for each place – it’s the overall food scene that’s at issue.” Ah, so the food scene is mystically “better”, but can’t name a single fucking place that’s actually better? lol Ok… well, you’ll excuse me if I don’t put too much stock in such a claim.

  5. “anecdotal though it may be. We’re not in food court arguing before an en banc panel of appellate food judges.” If you can’t even point to one fucking place that compares to the quality of the list of LA places I listed, you are just being provocative for no reason.

One assumes from this that Santa Ana actually sucks, but the fact that you live there means you need to convince yourself it’s better than the bounty of Los Angeles. Well, props to you, but you ain’t fooling the rest of us.

:joy:

You might take food discussion a little too seriously

I think you misunderstood a lot of what I said – I said “what do you want to eat” – that meant like “tamales” or “pambazos” or whatever. Not “I like to eat at Chichen Itza, where in the OC does the exact same restaurant exist?” So my bad, I wasn’t clear

Sorry you find me provocative, I’ll dress more appropriately at the next hearing

It seems reasonable to assume that people that take time out of their lives to dedicate cataloguing their eating experiences, share them with others, and discuss the best places to eat kind of give a shit about where they eat… no???

Maybe you don’t give a shit, that’s cool, can’t live anyone’s life but your own.

But one wonders why someone would bother to spend their time amongst people who do give a shit if that is the case…???

the new “single funniest thing posted on ftc”

I think the funniest thing is someone claiming Santa Ana has better Mexican food than LA without being able to provide even a single example. To each their own I suppose.
