jimmy sugi known for his takeout bentos is starting to do private dinners. the obvious comparison is to hayato and while it’s not at that level yet, i would say he’s one of the best for washoku/kaiseki cuisine i’ve had in la.
Did he let go of his plan to open a brick-and-mortar restaurant, do you know? I chatted with him a year or so ago (might be longer, time flies!) and it seemed that he was well into the planning of his own restaurant, which delighted me, but then I never heard anything more.
Does he host these at his own home? I picked up bentos from him in the arts district a few times years ago but diddnt know if he was still there. Does dinner price depend on ingredient choice/availability?
yes, absolutely delicious dinner with great ingredients and high level of execution. as @PorkyBelly says, closest comparison is Hayato, but without the reservation issues and price tag.
excellent dinner with the baron of bentos, the tsar of takeout, jimmy sugi. a one-man artisan dedicated to mastering his craft, some say he has the spirit of a true shokunin.
jimmy was really throwing out all the stops. This short rib bamboo stew in a thick tare was umami central. it’s a real treat to be able to eat his food!
An excellent meal but full disclaimer that I’ve been and remain a fan of his cooking and bento since the early COVID days when he first started.
I think I share a lot of favorites with everybody. The ebi/shiitake with generous lemon applied played beautifully together. The hamaguri broth had soooo much flavor. Tebagyo was tastier than I expected. And loved that saba rice. Really just picking items I liked more as the meal is just great overall. Really happy to have gone and hope to see more!
It seems to be an ask and eventually get invited thing. It’s like a more formal version of the type of food in the bento, which was what I was looking forward to
the shirauo with bloomsdale spinach was great pairing. seki saba excellent. the salty crispy skin on the kinmedai was perfectly cooked. and i can eat a whole pot of sakura ebi with rice.
