Good Weekend of Eats
Saltie Girl (pre - Jason Isbell at the Greek :cowboy_hat_face:)
Not sure why Saltie Girl doesn’t get much attention here. The food and bar are great, huge tinned seafood selection
Halibut Collars

Crab Toast

Soft Shell Crab

Loreto
New Frogtown Mexican seafood spot - got the BAddy review this week.
Great space.
Food was mostly good to excellent, but could improve: shucking on some oysters was ubpar (lots of shelly bits), and some of the ceviche/tostadas don’t “pop” as they should (like Sergio’s or Holbox’s).

Didn’t taka photo but loved Tostada a la Joaquin (Otoro, Soy Onion, Tomato, Avo, Yuzu Viniagrette)

Empanada Cameron

Spicy Lobster Torta Ahogada (Holy SHIT this was delicious)

Recently had this donut from Sidecar which may be my favorite donut in LA. Reminds me of Republique passionfruit mango pie, except without the mango and in donut form.

I want to pick up Matsumoto peaches this Saturday.

Which is usually better tasting, the bigger ones or the smaller ones?

I don’t go by size. I go by color, smell, and softness.

It’s passion fruit pavlova season, of course.

Damn peaches too! Can’t wait to buy some this week!

I got them in February in 2021, but I think there was an issue with getting the passionfruits or something else that moved the season later last year.

Where’s your favorite gelato place?

I’m deciding between Dolce Gelato

And

Gelato Paradiso

bulgarini

Bulgarini dusts the competition.

Bulgarini is probably the best in the country

No one is as picky with ingredients as Leo

The nut gelatos are insanely good

He also pairs gelato with wine and sours. It works!

You mine as well get some pasta while you are there. That twice cooked tomato sauce is

So are the fruit sorbets. Amazing. And a nice contrast w/ the very rich nut gelatos.

Went to Medan Kitchen for the first time. Really cool spot–loved just wandering around seeing all the different options in both the prepared food and the grocery sections. I had their coconut rice + fried chicken + beef rendang plate and I think the standout was the 4 or 5 different sauces that came with it. All super different, all super flavorful.

Then, I was heading back to my car when I saw a sign in an adjacent strip mall that just said EXOTIC FRUIT. I was powerless to resist, so I headed over. It has to be the best smelling store in the SGV, just a little storefront with a friendly woman who happily gave me pointers on what was sweetest right now, what needed a few days to ripen, etc. So far the biggest winner of my haul is the rambutan [EDIT: Mangosteen] , which is basically a totally different thing from the dried out rocks you get at 99 ranch; easily peelable by hand and as sweet and soft as the ones you get in Asia.

Very cool, thanks for the report! Is this the place: https://goo.gl/maps/R8cHbMpEtmAjYBqF9 ?

Did you mean mangosteen, rather than rambutan? This picture looks like a mangosteen.

Yeah that is the place and yeah I meant mangosteen. I had rambutan in my head because that’s what I usually get at ranch 99 instead because they’re not shrunken rocks there.
