Ah ok thanks for clarification!
I love the Lorenzo and Cheese Store, but slightly prefer Lorenzo, especially the new rafaello.
Interesting mortadella - la zucca hack.
Pane Bianco
Proscuitto burrata, arugula and heirloom tomatoes. Out of balance , I’m usually a more meat guy but the amount of proscuitto stuffed in the sandwich made it into a gummy salt bomb unfortunately. Needed some more tomato, acidity, or other flavors to compensate. I actually enjoyed the bites without proscuitto much more
A bang bang with the other half would be perfect…
Lousy day of travel, but a good day of eating. On the way to LAX our flight was delayed 2.5 hours so we stopped at Three Flames for lunch. My wife had the mushroom taco which she loved and I went for the shrimp and pork belly (a special) tacos which were excellent. The albacore tostada was probably my favorite dish at lunch and the cocotel mixto was good, but I’ll probably skip it next time in favor of another tostada.
After further delay we eventually made it up to Portland and thankfully Han Oak was able to push our reservation and seat us a few hours later than intended. I’ve been wanting to eat there for years and damn did it deliver. Every single savory dish that hit the table was somewhere between great and excellent. The only subpar dish was the tiramisu dessert, but we were stuffed by then so it was fine. We opted for the galbi jjim and acorn noodles (because I loved Yangbans version) as our mains. I’d eat at this place all the time if it were in LA. Go here if you are in Portland.
Are there any spots in Koreatown or elsewhere that do this kind of home style cooking really well?
Dang! Any pics of the dishes??
Borit Gogae comes to mind, but Ive only ever had the advertised for-2 set menu. I know you can order galbi on the side.
I’ll be in PDX in two weeks. I often think not to opt for Korean when travelling, since we have tons of options. Already booked at Davenport and Shalom Y’all. Considering braving the line at Eem. Where else are you eating?
Eem linr hasn’t been long in the past years! Initially really bad.
I always try to do Langbaan if I can get a Rez (I’ve done it solo and it’s a blast) along with Han Oak
Partner can’t do tasting menus so unfortunately Longbaan is out this trip. I’ve been before and it’s sublime (an old colleague was the former somm).
I hadn’t realized there were so many sandwiches, so, when I was looking at the menu upon arriving, I was like, “Which one did HHH get???” I assumed that their namesake sandwich couldn’t be too bad, so that’s what I got. ![]()
All of them! But you chose a good one.
I didn’t take any photos of the food. Sorry.
This was grea today for lunch. Thanks for mentioning it.
One thing Portland does not do well is hospitality. Everyone is very nice, but service is a disaster and we’ve waited quite a while to be greeted once we entered at both restaurants. Also Han Oak was a balmy 85 degrees inside so we both worked up a good sweat. The table next to us was on ther anniversary dinner and the woman asked to be moved because she was too hot to which the host responded “ma’am, we’re all hot” which was both hilarious and wildly inappropriate. Thankfully someone else came by about fifteen minutes later and moved them closer to the outside.
Quick stop at the newish Awan on Rose in Venice. The flavors are incredible-- dense, vivid and almost un-ice cream-like; ‘transcendent’ comes to mind, but I’m not sure I want to be the kind of person who uses that word.
They were out of the gaviota strawberry, so all three of us ended up getting the peach-apricot swirl. It was tough competition between that and the melon, but the swirl won out in the end.
Service was great: an enthusiastic iced treat dude. Three kids cups for $21.
^Han Oak is a great Korean restaurant - one of my favorite restaurant entrances as well. i first went in 2018 and they’re still on point.. same tier of consistency at Ox and Le Pigeon/Canard as well in PDX.
some bites of the week exploring new flavors around LA:
1 mango sticky rice at sweet rice in gardena
2 walnut-coconut raspado at raspados el chilango in east hollywood
3 chile relleno burrito at al & beas in boyle heights
4 chicken tinga burrito at burritos la palma in boyle heights
5 carnitas beans and rice with meat sauce burrito at el abajeno in culver city
6 cheeseburger combo with fries at hawkins house of burgers in watts
7 ghormeh sabzi and cherry rice at flame cuisine in westwood
Dang that is some good eat’n!
If you like burritos las palmas and you’re ever in Anaheim try Los De Juarez Burritos. Similar but with more filling options. The salsa is better. Really like the chile relleno, chiccaron and bean n cheese.
You were all over! Nicely done
There were only 4 people, including ourselves, in the entire space. I’m sure this attributed to the service being quite solid for our experience. Granted, it was a weeknight, but I do recommend giving it another go!
Lorenzo is definitely one of my favorites in LA but they’re closed on Mondays which is usually the day I feel like eating sammis. Then I find myself at the Cheese Store for the zucca (with the addition of mortadella) which is definitely deelish but doesn’t make me quite as happy haha.
