Sanook Soi 38 (West LA): This gorgeous presentation possesses a remarkable, slightly al dente consistency of the sweet rice, which really complements the dreamy pillowiness of the luxuriously ripe mango. All the more remarkable that I am able to get this at 11:45PM!
some bites from last weekish:
-
chile relleno burrito at la azteca, east la - has a ton of hype and it’s a really good burrito but i can’t say that it’s better than the chile relleno at al & bea’s though. if i just had to complain, the poblano was a bit undercooked.
-
fish taco at el dorado express - this is right by la azteca (i guess la azteca #2 is #1 now) and it was a nicely loaded fish taco with salsa and a pepper all for $3.50 and they even threw in some great chips.. definitely go here, big fan of that fish taco! would love fish taco recommendations actually, i need more of them! they also have smoked marlin tacos here
-
clayuda mixta at Tacos de Valle al carbón, culver city - a tent in the parking lot of a comic book shop that serves up great Oaxacan food - the clayuda platter is a huge dish, it ended up being 2 dinners - can’t complain.
-
breakfast burrito at tigres fuego, redondo beach - the chorizo breakfast burrito is the best bb i’ve had here so far. looking at some morning waves while getting sloppy and devouring a breakfast burrito on a bench is a nice touch.
-
sausage breakfast sandwich at a cut above, Santa Monica - they make the sausage in house, and they don’t skimp out here, filling and delicious
-
yakitori at gokigen tori, culver city - i was hoping this would be a great spot but unfortunately it was a bit of a bummer. i read some reviews that the food takes long but i had an opposite problem where it was a bit rushed. i ordered all yakitori, 7 pieces, the chicken lacked the sufficient charcoal/smokiness flavor to it and it was just way too salty.
-
torta de milanesa at La Vecindad Tortas a la Plancha, mar vista - i mentioned this place in the mar vista thread - it was so good that i had to go twice!
Really love what LA has to offer
Gewurtz is typically very fruity, floral and can be cloying. Always opt for dry Riesling (trocken), especially German and Austrian, if you’re looking for a versatile white.
Portland, OR.
First night out, Shalom Y’all. Great vibe, delicious food, thoughtful wines, good service. Reminds me of Mh Zh.
Summer Beets, celery, fennel, olive, cured lemon
Heirloom Tomatos, rose harissa vinaigrette, sunflower seeds, tahina
Charred Cabage, black sesame, ginger, tahini, chive oil
Picture was accidentally deleted.
Lamb Carnitas, cucumber salad, tahina, cured lemon, Aleppo pepper
Pita
Kachka in the cards?
has that with many of the sticks.
I did not have an issue with the binchotan flavor - which I thought was good.
That’s a pretty surprising fuckup for a place with three Michelin stars. You should have sent it back. If they didn’t have a dry Gewürztraminer they should have warned you and suggested something else.
Dry Gewürztraminer can be as food-friendly as Riesling. It’s hard for me not to order it on the rare occasions I see one.
Another stop at Mariscos Las Palmas on 120th and Compton Ave.
Might’ve been the best fish tacos out of this kitchen I’ve had. Peppery, crispy pieces of fish. Cold pico. Piles of crunchy shredded cabbage. Juicy limes. Smoky salsa. Two big tacos for $9 after tax.
Maybe HH. Yaowarat tonight.
Another great meal at the Oybar:
Jeff’s Bento Box;
Carciofi alla Giudea;
Scallop Crudo;
Miso Garlic Lettuces;
Softshell Crab sandwich;
New G/OG burger;
and Joutine.
TehranRo (Koreatown). I’ve never been in person, but have gotten delivery here about ten times. The salmon is exquisite—the best Persian fish I’ve ever had and better than 95% of Indian tandoori fish dishes. Get your Omega 3s and increase your Omega 3/6 ratio while eating delicious salmon!
it’s a nice little place and the people working there are very friendly. I’ve only eaten there during the day (weekend) a couple of times and it’s been pretty quiet. I imagine they do a lot of delivery orders and it’s probably much busier at night. I usually get a koobideh plate (yummy) but am looking forward to trying the lamb next time. I’ve been happy with what I’ve tried so far and it’s nice to have decent Persian food in Ktown.
First Look: Casa Dani
Presentations are really well thought out, prices seem pretty fair. The room is very nice, but it’s going to be loud when it’s full with low hard ceilings. I could do with out the music which seemed like a musak version of club music. The paella looked pretty legit
Actually good or just century city good?
Hard to say, I really just tried a few of the tapas and it’s early days I’d like to try more of the menu before saying but it’s at least ‘I didn’t mind dealing with the Century City mall parking lot’ good lol.
Thanks for everyone recommending petit grain. Their baked goods are so good. Favorite was tbe kougin aman but every thing was outstanding
2 al pastor tacos for $5 at the ricos tacos naomi on la cienega. i bet this place is great when they’re busy. but when they’re quiet, it’s just ok. the pastor had a great depth and spice to it. tortillas were not made to order, but they weren’t from a bag, either.
Soban DineLA. 44pp with the crab option. Very much worth it, obv. Not pictured: small jjigae, two purple rice. You get a small portion of rice to mix into the shell broth.
Casa Dani: SBE opens this eatery with Katsuya as its fraternal twin. Food-wise, Casa Dani offers some hits, and some misses. Paella notes first: Contrary to other reports, our seafood paella was very good. I specifically asked the kitchen to take their time with it, and the paella we ended up receiving had good socarrat. The oiliness here felt a bit heavy, but I didn’t mind, as this paella isn’t meant to be haute cuisine. Tortilla de patatas: A bit too soft. Tuna dishes were strong (the akami & otoro Andalusian tartare was a delight), as was the oxtail prep. Croquetas tasted decent as well, albeit Century City-priced. Dani Burger was straight up a salt bomb. The jamón was weak: Producer is 5J, per server, but the taste/marbling was not top (ibérico de bellota) grade. Plus, I suspect it was machine-cut (too thick). Desserts are ok. Defying expectations, the Basque cheesecake resembles souffle in its lightness, and no coffee (machine was broken, per our server). The room is gi-normous. I think if SBE’s goal here is to present Cal-Spanish to the masses, then it succeeds on an acceptable level.
Finishing up PDX. Coava was luckily up the street from our Airbnb. My favorite coffee in PDX hands down. Needless to say, they saw us four mornings in a row.
We had a rather disappointing meal at Davenport. The radicchio salad was way too bitter with little buffering contrast (vinaigrette, apple and crisp). The Tuna was weird. From the menu, we thought Fijian ceviche, but this was poorly executed, with lumpy/emulsified ingredients. The last two dishes were excellent. Great wine list, service was friendly (server) to bland (sommelier). Doubt I would return.
2022 Peter Lauer Riesling Senior #6 Phenomenal, with acid for days and serious, compacted fruit.
radicchio salad, apple, hazelnut, frico
ahi crudo, coconut, chili, ginger, lime, tomato, sesame, cucumber, rice cracker
seared scallops, yellow wax beans, romano beans, hazelnuts
grilled shrimp, tomato, thyme, onion, feta
So hungry, eaten before I snapped the shot. Best dish of the night too.
Thankfully, we had a fantastic lunch at Maurice. Lunch only at this delightful diner adjacent to Powell’s. Just go!
Norwegian Smørbrød: fromage blanc, figs, aleppo pepper
Burro Burrow Burrough Farm Egg Quiche: peas, lemon cucumber, chive salad, charentais melon
Dinner at Yaowarat was really delicious. Part of the Ninsom empire serving Chinese-Thai. sorry no pictures as we were with friends. Albacore Chae Nam Pla, Crispy Bean Curd Dumpling, Chive Cakes. All three apps were great. Khao Pad Pu, Mapo Tofu, Black Olive Pork also fantastic. Had a bottle of Muga Rose and Goodfellow Blanc. Highly recommended.
We took a detour to Rum Club on the way home. If you like rum….
We hit Luce for dinner. Italian food done in sensible potions (half portions available) with great results. The wine list is really good. As is the list at the sister wine bar next door, Bar Martina, where you will wait for your table over glasses of Gamay and cheese. Everyone is so nice in Portland and both bar and restaurant had wonderful, friendly service. Highly recommended.
crostini with smoked trout
pulpo, potato, olive
spaghetti, clams, garlic, chili
pappardella rabbit sugo
zucchini, salsa verde
lamb loin, olives, marjoram
Grenache blend from Rousillion
