Kyungbok Kung in Buena Park. Nice setting. Great service and the food was delicious. Highly recommend.

The fried tofu appetizer was delicious. Not a lot of banchan. The salad dressing is delicious. This potato pancake thing is good.

Smoking hot. The kalbi is luxurious. Some of the best we’ve had in a long time.

Kimchi jigae and naengmyun. I always like when they offer smaller sizes.

Combined a trip to The Broad to see the Yoko Ono show with a trip to GCM. Saw that Cinnies had opened in the Fat and Flour spot. Their rolls are huge, delightfully fluffy and not too sweet. Cinnies supplies cinnamon rolls to Max and Helen’s and can also be found at various farmers’ markets.

An advantage of having a quick lunch in Germany - nearly every bakery has very good sandwiches where you don’t have to pay >$15-20 for it.

This one with a large turkey schnitzel on a fresh ciabatta was $5

Technically end of May, went to Sudachi in West LA. Chef Haya from Sushi Yuzu in Toluca Lake is at the helm. Sat at the bar and the sushi kaiseki was a lot of food for $200pp. It was very busy on a Saturday night and most people ordered à la carte. Our kaiseki went a little out of order as the kitchen was backed up so got our dashi item after the sashimi course. I think everything was tasty and executed well, at the price point I would prefer to go to Kojima. Parking is validated for 2 hours at the Gelsons parking lot, but our meal was closer to 3 hours and we got charged $15. The parking attendant was nice and waved us by without paying.

What am I looking at in the last pic? The chartreuse, fluorescent glare of your hardened soul?

One of the nice things eating in Hamburg are the myriads of great Turkish restaurants. Iskele specializes in charcoal grilled fish dishes. You just order the entree and you better don’t order anything else as they bring out plenty of salad and mezze (haydari, pancar pembe kizmesesi, hummus, atom meze)

Levrek Kelbek - sea bass

German food so good that you’re posting about Turkish restaurants :joy:, I’m just teasing hope you’re having a great time in Germany!

About 4% of all people living in Germany have a Turkish background - so it’s more or less German food now

I had read about that. When partner and I were in Munich a few yrs ago, I made a bee-line for a well-reviewed (and super casual) Turkish place near our hotel. Partner (who doesn’t generally read about food) was like, “Why are we at a Turkish place???” The food was so good. We didn’t get a ton of (or any?) mezze, but the portions were ENORMOUS.

I also recall thinking that the food at the Munich airport tasted quite good and was not unreasonably priced (although maybe I was comparing to LA/LAX prices…).

Found myself in Santa Monica late this afternoon so decided to head to Kappo Miyabi on Arizona when I saw they are open all day rather than closing after a defined lunch period. I had ordered delivery from them during the pandemic, but never ate there in person.

On the positive side, as you can see from the picture, you can get a huge set lunch for $35. (Not shown in the picture is the tofu with bonito flakes which was hiding behind the sushi tray). The tofu was excellent, the salad was tasty, the tempura was pretty good for a non-tempura specialist, and the miso was good. Not so good was the sushi, but I guess what can you expect for $35? The rice just fell apart the second you touched the sushi and the sushi itself wasn’t great. I had added on (not shown in the picture) iwashi from Japan (just coming into season and hard to find at an “ordinary” sushi bar) and mackerel from Japan.

Also positive - it was a hot day and when I ordered cold green tea, they bought it in a chawan type cup that had been chilled and which had crushed ice. Nice touch.

Lunch set.

Also nice for hot tea, they bring you a pot with tea leaves. Not gourmet sencha by any means, but I appreciated the effort.

I would return to Kappo Miyabi, but wouldn’t order sushi again. During the pandemic, I remember getting some kind of natto dish from them that was good, but I didn’t spot it on the menu. Maybe not a lot of demand for natto in Santa Monica.

They have a pretty decent happy hour, too.
