steak frites - niman ranch ny strip, meat-masala au poivre, masala fries
Only that no bang bang? You went there this morning? ![]()
Google image search says Black ginger? Can’t verify the accuracy but it is next to regular ginger, so maybe?
Malanga? Chinese yam? A variety of galangal? Lots of possibilities.
Taro.
Taro plants form root structures called corms. Eventually they separate out.

How was Montrose? That looks pretty good.
It was pretty good. Best bites for me were the chicken liver pate and the dessert ![]()
After hearing about “prawn cocktail” flavored crisps a few times (and not in a complimentary way) on a UK-based podcast, I had grab a small bag when I saw them at Ye Olde King’s Head Shoppe last night:
After the first few bites, I was like, “Oh, these are pretty innocuous.”
And then a very weird, cloying, vaguely but “thick”-ish sweet yet umami-ish flavor crept up. It was sort of like what I imagine a stale ketchup powder mixed w/ something weirdly viscous would be, even though the chips were totally dry.
It never hit a very intense level, but it was kind of gross and certainly not something I could imagine wanting to experience again.
Not pleasant.
They’re supposed to taste of Marie Rose sauce (UK prawn cocktail sauce). It’s a mixture of mayo, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce (and sometimes a squeeze of lemon juice, and a shake of black pepper).
Ah, interesting! So the UK cocktail sauce is kind of thousand-island-y?
Yup. It’s pretty meh.
It’s excellent on a burger (with bacon and egg).
another delicious young coconut smoothie from donut king on motor/venice. supplemented with a breakfast burrito that i won’t be running back for (but i am going to go back to try some other breakfast options). it was about $15 before tip. great staff, sweet little community of folks getting breakfast on a saturday.
I also got FTC influenced and got a young coconut shake while I was waiting for an order from Mayura. Dangerously light, nice young coconut flavor
I am not sure why I am doing this to myself. I went to Westwood World Market today to look for pan handle covers and Calabrian chili, which resulted in me discovered the revamped food section. It must’ve been awhile since I’ve been in that area b/c I don’t recall World Market having tinned items (incl Matiz and Fishwives):
If you want pistachio cream w/ knufe and don’t have time to go to Epicurus, you can now get it at World Market (!).
And, if you were dying for some “cheese latte” from Starbucks (WTF), you can, um, get that at World Market now, too:
One of the employees told me that the food section in general had been revamped ~1–1.5 yrs ago and that the expanded Asian section came in 3–4 wks ago.
The food section is actually kind of wonderfully overwhelming. And it’s a bit trippy b/c I’m not sure what else has weisswurst (out of stock, so no pic), ginger-lemon haribo, a sectional sofa, or cat-person magnets all under the same roof.
Since the Tayto crips were already making me feel a bit international, I decided to stick w/ the deep-fried potato theme:
I don’t read Chinese, so I assumed that the red bag was going to simply be salt-and-pepper squid flavored (which I thought would be kind of strangely boring, but when in Rome…). I had no idea what “mieng kam krob ros” was but thought the writing looked Thai and felt kind of adventurous. I had briefly toyed w/ the idea of getting the chips that (1.) had a drawing of spare ribs; and (2.) mentioned “kobe beef” flavor, but I thought 2 bags were already too much.
Partner and I enjoyed the Thai chips (which actually did seem to have a decently strong lemongrass and vaguely coconut-y flavor; I’d eat them again). Partner took one whiff after opening the squid chips, said, “Uh, no,” and then pushed the bag toward me.
The predominant flavor for the squid chips was… the condiment my parents would mix w/ their hot pot when I was a kid. I think it’s called sa (?sha) cha/Chinese satay? I don’t ever recall having that flavor w/ fried squid and asked my friend (who reads Chinese natively) to translate. He said that the printed flavor is BBQ salt-and-pepper squid, and that he has also never sa cha w/ squid. This bag was only “better” than the prawn cocktail b/c the flavor is familiar to me. But the flavor is still not particularly welcomed, so I wouldn’t get this again.
The wasabi peas are just b/c I really like Aggretsuko. ![]()
