How could we not have heard that Wallace opened up its first US branch here last March? I guess it’s a testimony to the depth of the Chinese food in the San Gabriel Valley and where China based chains seem to open up all the time without fanfare. But the New York Times noticed it and that’s how I found out. Not one to order buckets of chicken, so I concentrated on chicken sandwiches and all I can say is if this were located near me I’d be there every day. Their regular fried chicken sandwich is fantastic and it costs only $3.98. Or you can buy three of them for $10.
There is one catch. They use dark meat instead of white meat. But we’re Chinese and that’s what we prefer anyway.
The grilled chicken wrap costs a few cents more and is also great.
Strangely there are few outward signs that this is a Chinese operation. They refer to chicken sandwiches, not chicken burgers as they’re usually called in the SGV, and there is no Chinese lettering anywhere. Only clues besides the use of dark meat are that most of the staff and customers are Chinese, and the Hungry Panda sign board on the sidewalk.
