Komal - Mercado La Paloma

Vegetarian lunch last Friday. A Yankees fan in front of me took forever but otherwise no line (it was out at the door at Holbox by the time I left). Milpa salad, molotes de platano, tlacoyos and a cactus/cucumber aqua fresca. Everything hit. The comment above about lack of flavor in Mexican cheese doesn’t apply to the molotes - without the salty queso fresco, the dish would be too sweet. The tlacoyos were very similar to a huarache but with maybe a little bit more bounce and definite earthiness (not sure if that’s down to the masa).

That’s impressive.

Yep; much to my disappointment, the “blue corn” tortillas at one of the Latino supermarts turn out to be, when you read down the ingredient list, “ blue” corn tortillas, as opposed to “blue corn” tortillas,

Went to komal yesterday.

I did not find their tortillas to be any better than a good taco stand that does hecha a Mano tacos. Also their tortillas did not standout compared to gastronomic stalwarts such as Damian, pujol, quintonil, or taco Maria. But maybe this is a failing of my own as I dont have the palate or familial historical understanding of tortillas.

The highlights were their mole and the squash blossom tacos.

Totally with you. I enjoyed the tortillas but did not register what makes them get all the praise from experts.

Went again. I like the place, for sure. The quesadillas are a large step above the average quesadilla you’ll get around town.

Also went today! Did takeout but everything survived well. Flautas, the plantain balls, and the mole were highlights. Also like the quesadilla. Only miss for me was the fluffy masa that was tamale like but not quite.

Considering going to the Mercado with kids today but haven’t been in a long time. Assuming Holbox is too long for kids to wait, are the other stalls relatively quick?

Komal could be moderately long if it’s very busy. Never seen a long line at the other vendors.

Pro tip for Komal. If you don’t mind eating in takeout containers, you can preorder for pickup at a designated time - roll right up grab your food and sit at a table, no waiting whatsoever.
