LA Times "50 essential dining experiences"

Interesting departure from the standard “best” approach. Too bad it’s subscribers only since I think it’d be more useful for tourists than the 101.

Nice to see Jenn Harris plug Langer’s classic, perfect pastrami rather than the degraded, gloppy #19.

Whatever tiny amount I pay for online-only access is reasonable for the food coverage even though the paper as a whole does suck pretty bad.

No pizza!
No indulgence meals a la Providence, Somni, Selene etc…
No Southbay destinations, Pedro Waterfront
Sure Earle’s is not bad, but how is Pink’s not essential?
No Dim sum
No Pioneer Blvd Indian
No Abbot Kinney, RVR, Gjelina, Tasting Kitchen, etc…
No Malibu Seafood or Neptune’s Net?

No Abbott Kinney was my first thought.

And somehow the part of town with Meteora, Jacaranda, Chi Spacca, Osteria Mozza, Pizzeria Mozza, and Petit Trois within one block of each other–and Providence and Kali nearby–got no mentions.

I felt like they were being consciously anti-bougie, which is fine with me because there are a lot of sources of bougie information.
