Late Night Food in the Bay Area

Drinking cocktails obviously also requires good options for a late night snack or meal. The Bay area has surprisingly few options and so it would be great to collect everybody’s experiences.

Let’s define late night as the kitchen at least be open until 11pm

Orale Taco Truck (San Jose)

Located in a residential area in East San Jose, this taco truck is open until 1am (on Friday and Saturday until 3am) and delivers really tasty tacos which can be ordered with handmade corn tortillas (highly recommended). Both salsas are quite nice with the green one moderately spicy and a smoky flavor and the red one having a significant spicy kick.

A few tables in front are also a plus to not have to eat in the car

This is useful collection of reviews by the reliable Luke Tsai:

La Marcha in Berkeley currently has a late-night happy hour 10-midnight seven days a week.

New Gold Medal in Oakland is open until 3:00 am (except Tuesdays they close at midnight).

Dan Sung Sa in Oakland is open until 2:00 am daily.

after cocktails in SF, used to go to Tselogs on Jones (until 3 or 4am, i forget) or Sam Wo, but both have since closed. and Tommy’s Joynt doesn’t open that late anymore.

some of the El Farrolito locations in Mission are still open until 3am or later.

Taishan in Chinatown is open until 3:00 am daily.

The “North Berkeley BART Taco Stand" is open till midnight, and 2 am on friday and saturday. Quite good street tacos (they let you dress them yourself, and my preference is “just meat and salsa”, so it works well). A bunch of organ cuts available, great tripe. Plenty of street parking nearby (and maybe also just… the BART has parking? I haven’t checked.)

is this the crew that is related to la guera down in LA? el chacho? just about every >10pm taco stand ive tried in the bay area has been at best extremely average….

down in the peninsula, zareens stays open till midnight

pinecrest diner in union square is open 24/7 starting on Thursday night. It hits the spot for greasy spoon diner. The patty melt is actually pretty fire, since they reopened after their remodel the food is surprisingly better.

I’m such a sucker for raising canes and I’m so stoked its open late, happy that the one in Daly City isn’t bonkers all the time.

Los Yucatecos in the TL, great panuchos and salbutes. it’s open til midnight and food is very consistent.

Okay King’s Thai #2 on Clement is also open til midnight and it hits the spot for that average thai-american restaurant. The pad kee mao is very good.

tacos el charro in the mission is pretty good..salsas are better than average. I’ve spent many a late night there after service. sometimes you gotta switch it up and get a torta there. speaking of tortas, the el farolito torta is only $10 still and pretty okay.

cocobang > 707 sutter > toyose. budae jigae hits the spot and everything is seasoned af.

abv obviously right, the burger is good, the cocktails are great. yuuuuge fan of the tarragon drink there.

late night places that I have regretted eating, the hot trash report

-The Melt on market, unseasoned fries, their signature sauce is just weird

-Taqueria Vallarta: I used to be a regular there because I liked how wet the inside of the burritos were but 3 times in a row I got undercooked beans and I never went back.

-Mr. Szechuan: white people love this spot but the food is somewhere between Chinese and Chinese American and I don’t know what to make of it. Tried a couple things, eggplant was like candy sweet and one of their soups tasted like MSG water.

-SF Hole in the Wall Pizza: hot trash and gave me food poisoning

-Buster’s Cheesesteaks: fryer oil viscosity is like refrigerated maple syrup

-One Bite in the Castro: It has surprisingly good reviews for what amounts to really mediocre shawarma and since they don’t have a hood in there, they have those ventless hoods that don’t really work that well so you come out reeking of fryer oil…and since they don’t have a hot line they kind of just build the wrap cold then cook it for like 15 minutes on the plancha and everything gets hot inside including the sauce and pickles. It was really bad.

Tacos Santo Toribio (San Francisco - Mission)

Close to the corner of Mission & 22nd is the late night taco truck “Tacos Santo Toribio”. It delivers good but not outstanding tacos but has the advantage of being reliably at this place even after midnight (some of the other close by places like Tacos El Charro have closed or very unpredictable hours in the moment)

San Jose has a number of interesting late night taco trucks on some of these endless industrial/mini mall streets like Story Rd or Monterey Rd.

Tacos Panchitos Taco Truck https://panchitotacosfoodtruckca.com is on Monterey Rd and has the advantage, especially on a Sunday night, to be open until 2am. Excellent tacos served “naked” but plenty of options to dress it at their extensive salsa and condiments bar
