New Pho Akaushi spot. It’s a very nice modern space with about 4 patio tables. It’s just west of Rodeo 39.
Sergio (Uncle Tom) was not in the building. The wait staff is all young college age kids. God knows who did the broth. The beef pieces were all nice.
The broth? TBH it lack that magic when Tom was making his pho on the second floor of a Little Saigon supermarket. There was a certain charm to that.
That broth when I first had it was so beautiful and nuanced. Such a perfect balance.
Today’s bowl was average sad to say. A little heavy on the salt. No faint hint of those spices dancing in the background. More salty than the savory.
Maybe it was a off day.
After Oliboli and Pho Akaushi there is no room for Banh Xeo Boys. Maybe Phin Smith or Cococane.
Pandan horchata from BXB. Skip the actual banh xeo though.
THEN head to phin smith.
I’m definitely try that Horchata Pandan before I leave.
Phin Smith Vietnamese Iced Coffee still so damn good dude du ma.
Mia Juicery is now occupying that space in the hallway.
Oh they also got a coconut coffee smoothie at Phin Smith that is absurd
funny you should say this… why is that? on their IG they seem to have streamlined everything by cooking the proteins and crepe separately and then tossing the proteins inside when done.
There’s definitely a lack of cohesion in the finished product; the quality of the proteins do not make up for it.
But their biggest hurdle is the togo format and their choice of smallest plastic container possible for fish sauce instead of giant styrofoam container like every other place in Little Saigon. I should not have to ask for 8 of these. It’s just not a great dining experience IMO. But they have 4.5* on Yelp so the fuck do I know.
Agree with you 100%. I needed more sauce, too.
Also looks like there is not enough lettuce
it would just be eating dry lettuce with dry banh xeo.
Du ma went to Cococane and they closed because they ran out of sugarcane. Went to Ba Le and they are closed as well du ma
Ngu Binh Bun Bo Hue still fantastic! I would bring your own noodle soup bowls it would make it a lot more enjoyable.
BYONSB.
Thanh Son Tofu
I love the Pandan Tofu Pudding! More than the soy milk itself!
Insider tip: If you want fresh hot pandan soy milk come at 10am. They almost always sell out pandan soy milk.
Perfection
Thanks! You just decided on my lunch!
The often imitated but never duplicated Thuan Thoi Original Cococane.
There are copycats from SGV to Houston even.
I feel like they should give Cococane some royalties.
I really like Cococane’s online ordering through Chownow; I got the Aruna with extra coconut meat. I also got #11 at Ba Le, but I added egg to mine. Quite good!
I’ll have to try Ba Le again but the one time I had it, I preferred Saigon Bakery. I’m just never ever in that area.
