March 2025 Rundown

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, I think I’m getting them mixed up.

Is the Bigg Chill the one w/ the long lines???

They’re across the street from each other. I don’t go to Penguin’s often, but let’s just say I would be surprised to learn that there are long lines there.

Bigg Chill is the one with the long line. I’ve never seen a line at Penguin’s.

Sichuan Impression in Westwood

Impressive cold noodles and “refreshing” fish fillets in golden soup. I don’t read Chinese, so not sure what makes the golden soup refreshing, and I certainly would not characterize it such (just as a description, not in terms of whether I enjoyed it).

They were very busy on a Sunday evening, which was nice to see. Food is still very good, and I liked the cold noodles so much that I might start getting that as a workday lunch once in awhile to treat myself. I liked the golden soup better than the fish fillets in rattan pepper; this golden soup has a more subtle heat. And they put a TON of fish in this!

La Serenata (Westwood)

Signature Quesadilla, chile colorado, mole enchiladas.

I think the food here is absolutely lovely, and it breaks my heart to see it so quiet. I think the entire time we were there, there were only 2 other parties (and not simultaneously). I have no idea how they are still open, but I’m glad that they are.

Please eat here!!!

I’ve only been to each of those once! I can’t remember what the specific quesadilla was that I had at the Boyle Heights location, but it was the most delicious quesadilla I have ever had in my life (I still remember it more than 20 yrs later!).
