That’s funny because back when it was our go-to semi late night haunt in high school we would always complain about it being expensive. Love the reminders of the LA OGs!

We live pretty close to the westside one but I haven’t gone yet because I assume the vibe isn’t the same

Canter’s has the worst food of any restaurant I would go to willingly. Great atmosphere and so much history. What’s the Turtles song that mentions it?

That is a delicious bagel

Lyrics sites transcribe it as “what other kids at camp just going to say” but I’m sure it’s “what are the kids at Canter’s going to say.”

Consider me influenced. I am the newest member of the Donut King Young Coconut Smoothie Fan Club…

Donut King in Tustin?

No, the DK on Motor & Venice (West LA)

Quesabirria from El Cabrito de Texcoco in Gilroy.

Very goat-flavored!

Good ratios of cheese-onion-cilantro-meat. The tortilla was nice and chewy and had crispy cheesy bits on its edges. Surprisingly, it was not greasy at all.

Consommé was better than average, but not Barbacoa Ramirez level, even though this one had little chickpeas in it, too.

One main and a jarritos for $18.

Two Rose sausage pie. I won’t be making the drive again but wouldn’t hesitate to stop by if I was in Hollywood on a Thursday night. The crust (sourdough focaccia?) is something special.

I am curious how the MEHKO situation works itself out as time goes on. I’ve been to Granada a few times and this struck me as something similar, a lot of instagram hype and talk about community but mostly noise and congestion for immediate neighbors. Certainly more than 30 people being served daily at both institutions.

do they have social media?

I almost went today! How was the line/crowd/seating situation? I want to make it and support but not sure I can handle the combo of traffic/parking/waiting/table scoping with the kids…

Yeah, this is kinda my thoughts on Two Roses. Really good, but maybe not destination worthy, especially with the lack of much else on the menu. A decent bang bang with Bar 109 though.

Some May bites:

Hush puppies (great! I loved the corn kernels) and fish cooked in paper from Queen’s. The fish itself was fairly bland and only really enlivened by the olives and peppers around it. It was my first visit. The inside of this place is very cool.

Beef biryani and roti from Roshona Bilash. Biryani is 95% rice and the meat felt like an afterthought. Partner said the roti reminded her of the tortillas her one grandma would make. The prices are low. A samosa (semi-pictured) was not very warm and came with an acrid green sauce that I powerfully disliked. I heard the guy offer to make the white sauce extra-spicy for some customers who asked, which was nice. There are other things on the menu I’d like to try so I’ll be back.

Weekday breakfast at Compass Rose. I did the Lebanese breakfast platter (marinated olives, man’oushe, feta and labneh, tomatoes and cucumbers). That man’oushe has a wonderful fluffy texture but you need the labneh to balance out how salty it is. It was just me and two other solo diners at 10:00 on a beautiful Tuesday morning, yet they had the patio heaters blasting, speakers up super loud playing dentist office waiting room music of the future, and sage burning. It’s not boozy weekend brunch, it’s people trying to read books or work on computers - pushing a “party” vibe was annoying and thoughtless. Who is benefiting from this?

Lastly, and I don’t have any pictures, but Botanica still rocks. My favorite restaurant in Silver Lake. The steelhead trout with confit tomatoes and white beans is a favorite. Trout skin is so crispy; reminds me of tilefish.

Weird it’s not normally like that. Must’ve been whoever opened that day. Glad to give Rose that feedback.

I live down the block I’d love to see some more people there for breakfast I think if they had more than just cheese fwd dishes it would be better

Had lunch at Taste of Tehran on Westwood Blvd., just a few doors down from Feast from the East (where I almost went). Wasn’t expecting much, but the chicken kabob was tender and tasty and only $18. Haven’t been in years to the “sit down” Persian restaurants on Westwood Blvd., but I just noted that the chicken kabob at Flame is $25. I doubt I would have liked it $7 more, although if I recall correctly you get some fancy bread at Flame rather than just mundane lavash. And of course it is more of a “real” restaurant.

The only reason we made the trek was because they took preorders on whole pies through instagram. Of note, we are usually a two pie household but one was plenty.

We arrived around 545. Parking was not excellent. I am unfamiliar with the neighborhood but it seems to rely on street parking. The line to order looked to be ~15 minutes, preorders were warm on top of the oven. There were a handful of tables that were all occupied and competition waiting for the flips. There was also at least one other family with young children. We bailed for Bob Burns park down the street and had an enjoyable evening.
